I just want to find-out whether or not a CDI from a Bandit or 1200Y will fit.

The GS has the 180km limiter disabled so that isn't the issue, it pisses over 180 in 3rd-5th gear.

It revs out cleanly in 1st-4th but in 5th at pretty much bang on 8250rpm it hits the Wall, it isn't bogging or leaning out.

I'm not interested in what it'll do full tap and couldn't be bothered investigating a figure in a straight line. It's got enough porridge down low to loft the wheel easily enough & break the ass-end out when I want.

I just want to rid the bike of the issue coz I've found it, know it's there and it's annoying

I'm not interested in digging in to hauling vast amounts of HP out of the thing yet, the ZXR is my toy for fucking around with in that respect and it's currently lined up for a wee pile of items as it is.

When the time comes for chasing the GGs I know what I'll be wanting & where to get it.
The majority of slip-on that I've seen fitted to GS's all look like after thoughts IMO irrespective of their abilities to improve performance most look gaudy and if I was to put something on it'd be this below, it's minimal, snug, & has a clean balance in keeping with the bike's lines
Yea yea yea...........still awaiting a reply via Japan, settle gretle.

    who you quizzing willis

Just frustrated I spend all day fixing & sorting other peoples fuck-ups on bikes then when it comes to seeking a simple answer to a reasonably simple question it's like getting blood out of a stone

Should just rape one of the next Bandit I see unattended

Staying on ya question twr , ridden a gsx1200y , didn't seem as perky as the bandit at higher revs .If it was me I'd be lookin at bandit cdi. Bandit has gearbox ignition retarder too im told , is there something like that on the GS?

not a mechanic , but the bandit 1200 pulls out to 11k thats red line .
also a limiter at 260km/h so ive been informed.and it pulls 8500rpm at 240km indicated .
4 th gear will pull 205 easy indicated and i think theres still a bit to go before red there as well .
also no good going over the red line as this will possibly melt rings .
the max hp and torque kicks in at 6k so really going over 7.5k is quite a waste of time .
    just some usuless information.

I'm not sure about the 1200Y but with a bandit having the lower gearing compared to the GS if there is a gearbox ignition retarder system in place then as they both pull a top speed of around the 245km/h mark then a Bandit one should allow the GS to rev out further.

Though I've delved around a bit and a Dyna 2000 DDK33 ignition unit will fit 5 mapping programs etc but to utilise the unit fully a set 2.2ohm coils and leads should be used.

Also found this too which makes the addition of Yoshi bits a bit pointless.

Pre 99 bandits are where I'm looking at getting a CDI from and the technical data I've got uses a 97 model as the basis of their tuning efforts.

The GS makes 100hp at 8k rpm so that's basically my bug-bear issue, having it hit the wall only a fly-shit above that is stupid and I've never had a bike do similar before.

That should be interesting Mike, the wee buggers have some stupidly hot-rodded GS's floating around over there but just finding a bit of a mild scenario to cure the issue will suffice.

On a side note here's a bit of what is to be done to gain a peak HP of 127hp at the wheel on a Bandit:

107.5 main jets (up from 102.5)
40 pilot jets (up from 37.5)
Suzuki race kit needles (from a GSX-R750RR, better than Dynojet needles)
    GSX-R1100L cams
    Yoshi igniton advancer (4deg advance)
    K&N filter
    GSX-R1100L airbox cover
    Skorpion muffler

Made a 29hp increase over stock and a 11hp increase over a Dynojet kit that they'd previously tried in the bike.

Spoke with a friend yesterday TWR, He has my old bandit and an SS !
He was of the opinion that the CDI can't be used and that you will need a thing called a TRE which is I believe a de restrictor device , He has one on his Busa as well ! (yes he has a shit load of bikes !)) Hope this helps ? Gaz

    Thanks Gaz,
But a timing retard eliminator hasn't any effect on gears above third, basically in plain english a TRE fools the ECU to thinking the bikes in a higher gear and thus increases the voltage & resistance drop that the GPS (gear position sensor) signal delivers to the ECU.
    In 5th gear the voltage & resistance are roughly 4.25v & ~6500ohm whereas 3rd & below are 2.9v & ~1500ohm and below.

The GS hasn't got EFI so doesn't have a ECU

Though I might just do a diagnostic on the ignition system to check if there is any significant loading or lack of on it at different rpms

    sorry to thread dig,

did you ever find the answer? If not , and you're in auckland i can whip mine off i have the gsx1200Y and test it

and...did you do anything to the carbs? i run the same carbs and wondered wether it's worth looking at mine or getting some bandit/gsxr1100 ones.

BTW my motor limits at 12.5k - looking at dropping my front sprocket a bit to give me some acceleration. Not that I really need it.
