how in the hell does a clutch cable break?
They do, just from general usage.
Never heard of one just going without someone squeezing the lever, so suspect someone was having a wee play.

story so far.....I remember for some time now when I pull the clutch in it sort of clicks and isn't smoothe. Due to lack of any maintenance and never thinking to look why or dare to think maybe I should try and put a little oil or grease on it. Well it is that little barrel end on the cable not pivoting as it should do in the lever. Slowly one by one the strands of the cable start to break right next to the barrel at end of cable. It will keep working with maybe only 2 or 3 strands intact. Maybe someone while getting off their bike in inadvertently bumped your clutch lever severing the last strands. Maybe the last strand broke when I pulled it in tonight. Maybe I'm a dumbarse and nobody deliberately broke anything. Let us all know where the cable broke.
You are the dumbarse. It was a new cable, greased to hell, adjusted perfectly and pulling smooth. A weld failed due to extreme mechanical stress cause by someone pulling in the clutch beyond its normal travel.
Thankfully the culprit has owned up to me after I posted this thread and has offered to help cover the cost of repairs.
Unfortunately it's not as simple as welding the barrel back on. The inside of the housing has been damaged so that the cable no longer glides smoothly up and down inside it. The cable plus housing will need to be replaced. $$$![]()

You could try them?
I once had a cable done for me by Aotea Industries out in manukau, my throttle cable was rooted, sticking majorly and they did me one for $70
Am I missing something? How does a clutch cable "adjusted perfectly" go on to pull the clutch "beyond its normal travel"? Sounds to me more like the cable was damaged or faulty. If it was a "new cable" I'd be taking it back to the shop.
Edit: Either way, stink that it happened. Hope the fix is easy and cheap. Good luck
either that or the lever was that flogged they were able to lift it past the bar and keep on pulling it

To disengage the clutch you only need to pull the lever in a little way, if you squeeze it all the way to the handle its way way too far. I'm not familiar with other bikes but I've only had to squeeze the lever about half in to reach the limit of what the clutch can move so that squeezing the lever to the rubber of the handle repeditively will eventally break the cable. And if you say I've adjusted it wrong than every mechanic who has ever adjust the clutch for me is wrong too.
I had sat on my friend's brother's EN125(couldnt ride coz it won't start anymore lol) but clutch was soft as GN and can be gripped all way in, unlike wat your bike have. Shouldn't your bike be the same? Did you try the clutch of other GX125??
The idea of you cant grip the clutch all the way in is strange to me, but I don't know much so it's just my opinion....

The gn125 I rode let the clutch all the way in.
