I was quite concerned and had to re-read this part...

I know it normally "is my fault" but was wondering how anyone knew...

    (glad it wasn't me!)

As a follow up to this story. When I went to go to sleep last night there was a big punch up happening. I called Mr Plod. Hell I wasnt expecting a wagon and dog controller turning up. Thought I was back in Sarf Dorkland for a minute.

Big ups to the response time and calming things down.

And Apparently it was so boring it not only caught your attention you wrote a rather signifigant post on the subject.....

Now to clarify, those of you who assume I am one of west auckland (a true westie) and think I haven't travelled, i'm actually relatively new to the area, and to remove all doubt- I actaully served in the RNZN for 5 years, and lived in close quarters with MOSTLY islanders and maoris. So obviously I know not everyone can be lumped into the same category, and that generalisations are flawed, I just call it how I see it. FFS

Actually at the risk of the wrath of some on here. I moved out of Auckland - (went to Tamaki College and brought up in a state housing area) to escape the kind of crap I experienced last night.

BUT I felt like I had gone back 10 years. So yawn away!

Why is it, that those of you who are of the tanned variety (black/whatever) feel the need to...stare down those in other vehicles/those walking along the road? Is it in your genes? Some sort of way of marking your territory? .....I get stared down alot. No reason, just stared at(you know your being watched right) you .....um tanned persons glaring at you and won't budge their gaze... whats the fucken problem? Sure Iv'e had this happen before, but not everyday. I'm not doing anything different, not being particularly threatening or offensive, can someone explain this idiotic shit to me?

I'm a small part Maori and grew up in a very racist town with my dark skinned mother, Alice Springs in Central Australia. My mother speaks the Queen's English, and is very intelligent. Her and my father built a rather successful construction company, her on the books,, dad running the gangs of workers.
I just wanted to make sure you realise I had a typical successful white upbringing.

I had no concept of racism and didn't understand it until I got to NZ at 12.
Because the whites and browns mixed here, racism was more apparent. Where I lived, the blacks were smelly people who never washed and spent all day sitting around campfires in the bush, sitting in bars, or sitting in dried up river beds, always drinking and often bludging cash or cigarettes ("godda dolla blok? eh bloke, godda ciggy?").

The first thing I noticed about the brown people in NZ was they appeared much more social, and also much more aggressive.

They looked after each other, and yet were far more likely to snap and want to fight.

Honour was a big part of their culture, possibly because they tended to have little else of value, and there seemed to be a chip on their shoulders most of the time.

Being part Maori myself, I found it rather interesting the way they would judge me as a white guy, then when they found out my mother was brown, they would often then feel guilty and try to befriend me, thinking that this was a white guy who wouldn't judge them and may be of some use.

I found that the aggression and attitude problems tended to be only with the lower socio-economic brown people as well. The more successful ones blended in and were just like the successful whites- calmer, not out to make trouble, able to rationalise better, and happy with their place in the universe.

I now don't experience racism except in the poorer areas, so (this is for the OP) I think it's largely related to their poorer status and poorer family/social structure and upbringing, and only a small part genetic.

    That's my 2c, plus change.

Why do people always say it to do with wealth - take that how you want
NZ treats niggers like heros give them this and that - negro means black in lots of languages, nigger is the slang so therefore nigger can correctly refer to any dark skined scum....

All blacks have always been violent, I say it's because we won't let them eat each other anymore - give them back the right to eat 2 blacks a week and solve two problems with one feed.

The Australian Aboriginals were a purely peaceful nomadic race with no violence other than as a punishment to those who broke social rules (eg: murderers, rapists, adulterers etc), until the great white man came along and decimated their race with guns, making it legal to shoot them until the 70's and introducing them to alcohol and drugs, and stealing their children to train as slaves and trying to breed or kill them out of existence.

Lets not talk about violence and race, because history has shown that the whites have been equally or more violent and cruel.

Nigger and Negro come from negroid and Niger, incorrect terms used to describe a Nigerian. It was used to describe all Africans, and was adopted by other English speakers to describe their own indiginous dark skinned people.

The Maori side of my family are largely in the education industry- teachers, headmasters, librarians and the like. There's a corporate account manager for an insurance firm, a few farmers, an IT engineer and a corporate technician for an ISP.

They judge people based on their achievements and attitudes- the things that define you as a person.

The Scottish side of the family are a bunch of narrow-minded drunks and hillbillies.

They judge you on how much you can drink, how many kids you can have, and how well you can fight.

This is a clear indicator that skin colour does not define the person, actions do.

Not so well said Sir, even taking into account that your from CHC. I have never heard a more stupid and ignorant statement from anyone white, black, brown or even suntanned. Has to be a piss take as you really can´t be that stupid? Eh..?

If this is a suggestion that the converse is the case then you probably should have have paid more attention at school.....your history teachers weren't just trying to teach you a bunch of useless dates and facts, they were trying to give you a perspective (hopefully a balanced one).

Take a good hard look at European history both ancient and recent. From a "human rights" perspective it's a rather sad story of human behavior participated in by people with skins ranging from milky white to gently tanned.

Was reading this with interest... It aint a westie, or south AK issue. I was out for a run (on my feet) with my wife along Ti Rakau Dr, by Botany at about 9.20 this morning and a high ace van full of 'not quite locals' threw a bottle at us. Smashed on the ground just in front of us just missed showering us with glass. They all looked around to see if they got us so wasn't an accident... But I guess it was probably my fault... because I've got a job, pay my bills and yes you guessed it... I'm white!
