Killer tried to make murder look like motorcycle accident

When Ryan Boland murdered his girlfriend, he tried to cover his tracks by making it look like a motorcycle accident.

Boland, 33, beat long-term girlfriend Natasha Waalen, 28 to death. He then looped a nylon strap round her body and arms and set up her body and motorcycle to look like an accident had occurred, placing them around 40 to 50 feet from each other.

Boland, who has a 4-year-old daughter with Waalen, initially told police that Waalen had been drinking heavily the night of her death and took off on her motorcycle

But a Minneapolis crime laboratory official was suspicious, as Waalen had no scrapes on the bottom of her feet, despite not wearing shoes or socks. Further examination showed that Waalen had injuries on her hands consistent with defending against an attack.

"It's not that unusual for a suspect to lie about what happened, but it's highly unusual for a suspect to concoct a whole other scenario," said Lt. Paul Sommer of the Anoka County Sheriff's Office. "I've never seen anything like that."

Boland’s brother, Timothy, 31, has also been arrested, charged with second-degree murder and aiding and abetting second-degree murder.
