I use a "writing rules" sheet for the kids in my class, similar to this:
Here are some tips for writing a well written paper.
Why are you writing this paper? Write it out on top of the page. I want this job, I want to get into a programme at school, I want to get laid. Now you have a purpose for the paper.
It's all about white space. White space is accomplished by correctly utilizing paragraphs. Paragraphs are a three or four sentences dealing with one single thought or idea.
All well written papers have an introduction, a body, and a conclusion.
Don't use too many commas. Remember, "peanut butter and jelly" doesn't need a comma because they are two separate things that are related. "I'm going home, and going to bang my neighbor's wife" does need a comma because they are two separate thoughts.
Be careful of "myself". If you're not sure, re-word the sentence. If you have any questions ask Bill or myself. (is wrong) If you take "Bill" out, you're left with "If you have any questions ask myself.
Be careful of "me". Bill and me went to the beach. Something, take "Bill" out and you're left with "Me went to the beach.
Use the correct there, their, they're, principal, principle, capitol, capital, seem, seam, our, are...
All numbers under "ten" are written out. If a large number is the first word in a sentence, it's written out. Fifty years ago...
It's is a contraction of "it is".
