Me too - I haven't seen a laptop with pluggable components (other than RAM, modem/wifi ) in ages. I looked up Zepto and it appears you've got a pretty nice machine. Where did you get it?

Laptops are slowly getting back to modular/removable components. It's cheaper/easier for the manufacturers to have different levels of hardware without having to come up with some new and exotic PCB for each individual model.

To the OP: How badly were the heat sinks/fans clogged?

    Damn... no good man.

Sounds like the lack of airflow cooked all the nice solid state bits.

Check e-bay for a replacement video card. The mobile chip sets are pretty standard. Like... there isn't a Toshiba/Dell/Sony specific 7600. All the 7600 mobile boards should all be the same.

It's VERY rare that the PCI bus controller cooks in a case that the video card is still kinda functional. The card itself draws the most current. The onboard bus on the motherboard not so much. The bus is probably OK. Card not so much. Good news = video card replaceable and should fix the problem.

but if i disable the video card the lines are still there, the lines are even there on the boot screen... could it still be the chip?

would this be something zepto could fix if i sent it back?

If Zepto couldn't fix it I guess no-one could. But you'd be sending it to Denmark - you'd be without it for quite a while.

    Do you have householders insurance...?

How are you disabling the video card?

Something like running safe mode uses a set of simpler reduced capability drivers.... but the card hardware is still being used to render the images.

Using the s-video output still uses the video card.

Unless you have a second video card bouncing around in there... disabling the video card would result in 0 picture.

From the look of it, I'd say either your panel is fucked or the interface cable to the panel is fucked.

I haven't read the entire thread though, not sure if this is only a problem when you're not in safe mode. If that's the case then it probably isn't a hardware problem, although I wouldn't rule out the (generally) lower resolution of safe mode playing into that somewhat.

If you spent $700 on it, why not keep it? It's good quite reasonable specs.
On the other hand it's a pretty rare brand - I just had a look on E-bay and there isn't a single instance of Zepto.
