Chain clean & lube recommendations suggestions needed

Hi I am looking to do my first ever chain clean (its overdue since i have done over 700kms!)

I have engine degreaser which I can use for cleaning. However what do you recommend for a lube? Particular brand? Went to Repco & Supercheap (Manukau) but couldn't find anything specific for Chain lube (just CRC, WD-40 and the like) Any suggestions? or Shops etc

Also correct me if the steps below for cleaning seem incorrect (?) :

1. Toothbrush on hand, use degreaser to clean the chain
2. Wash out with water
3. Bike on middle stand and let the rear wheel spin to dry it out and warm chain up
4. Apply chain lube

Thats pretty much the same as what i do.
I also try clean out the gunk from the front sproket aswell, cause it builds up there also.
Make sure you wipe off any excess oil from the chain afterwards, you wouldnt want it getting on your tyre.

My first time left me feeling quite spent and exhausted. cleaning my chain.
Dude at biek shop recommended SimpleGreen MAX...it was shite IMO...and EXPENSIVE!!!
Halfway thorugh (or quarter...) it hought must be a better way so to the dubdubdub it was.
Bike forums (KB included), and my bike's user manual afer i downloaded it!recommend kerosene...NO effort with this, and a damn sight cheaper Crazyv!!!

Yup so toothbrush, kerosene, scrubscrubscrub, water, repeat till you can actually see chain (took me ages to find mine under the crap...)

in terms of warming up/drying out...read that a gentle ride be aight for an unlubed chain? dunno if this is the case or not, but i take mine out for a 5min 40kmh ride...come back warm-ish (kinda guess thats what happend when its unlubed!!!)
small bits of old lube/gunk tends to be squeezed out again form the chain, so i quickly wipe off any.

Lube i use be Golden Spectro Total Tac.

Just cleaned and lubed my chain (after 1500km!!! ) the night before a half Coro loop yesterday so had the time for lube to settle in.

Few hundred km's later and at home today knew i had to clean up the lube fling, and my chain is still clean and still sticky, so i guess tis a sign of lube doing its job?

From what i have also read an uber sticky lube means you dont have much fling covering your chain-side of bike/tires/wheels if your chain guard aint long enough. But it means that gunk gets trapped at the chain...

But a less sticky lube does the lubing, and protects chain by literallly flinging off the gunk when it sticks to it.
Which just means relubing at regular intervals, and cleaning flung-upon parts of bike...including yourself

Probably doesn't matter too much as I dont imagine the GN has an O-ring chain, but in the off chance, I would recommend against degreaser and say go for kerosene, the reason being that some degreasers may attack and damage the rubber seals. Kero wont.

It might be overkill for your bike but I've been using a new chain lube I found at supercheap, it's called Silkolene titanium chain gel, not the cheapest but the best stuff i've ever used. I've done 1300km on a brand new chain and sprockets and my chain hasn't needed adjusting at all. I would think any basic chainlube would be fine for your bike, the key is to apply it to a warm chain, so do it after a ride. This helps it to stay on the chain and not fling off in the first 5 minutes!

Yea thanks for that... Yes this GN is a O-ringed one (the manual says something along the lines of this and recommends use of O-ring lube)

It also mentions not to use any petrol or other gasoline type products for cleaning the chain as it will damage the O-Ring. So good call on that.

I'll check if they have the Silkolene titanium chain gel .. cheers

I use Chain wax it works sweet as, clean up with kero and rags

Kero to clean, Maxima chain wax to lube, always apply to a hot chain if at all possible ie: take it for a ride before you use the wax, spray it on and let it cure for a while then you're golden for anything up to 600km's in my experience.

Thats what I use its good stuff only about $18 a can lasts ages
