    The Red Light Accelerator

I watched in awe today and waited for the crash....which didn't happen but the dude sure tried hard......

Was heading through Hamilton East, approaching the lights at Clyde Street, still quite a way back. Lights go orange. A car's in front of me, also quite a way back from the intersection. When the orange appears, driver plants the boot and accelerates towards intersection....light goes red before he's there, still keeps the boot down and blasts through, against the red.....by which time I have my fingers in my ears waiting for the smacko......which miraculously fails to eventuate......

Weather was atrocious at the time, heavy rain, very poor visibility, slippery road.....but still racing the red. And of course, couple hundred metres further down is another red light, this time with lines of traffic already stopped, so loonylegs has to stop anyway........and didn't move until the first light had gone green and everybody had caught up...nett gain - 0 seconds.....nett risk to others - incalculable.....

Usually I would dob that sort of thing in but was too far back to get all the details.....but I still wonder what the motivation was......

Happens all the fucking time. When I first moved here I was amazed to see that cars don't leave the line like Olympic sprinters when the light goes green. Now I know why.

Yep .... makes me want to own a bazooka-equipped CBR.

If there can be anything worse than that, there is. It's the person who is behind you and your bike when YOU brake for the orange at the same time as THEY'RE going for turbo boost!

Then of course there's the one (from personal experience - twice) who swerves out past you on to the wrong side of the centre line to run the red.

Lol, at least now the Aucklanders can ride to the V8's! But, yes I don't think that was the best move by the council

That is probably one of the safer sets of lights, Avalon Drive Forest Lake road is the worst and I take extra care there. A guy from work saw a truck shot through the red light at Te Rapa straight/Avalon drive the other day.He was coming up to the intersection and wondered why no one was going on the green then he saw the truck bowl through. Lucky everyone was onto it

We have or fair share of idiots on the road here so take care if you do ride down. The 2 intersections I mentioned are both on SH1.If you aren't coming into Hamilton there are some great roads to take as a bypass as I'm sure most will know.

Thanks for the advice but I'd be riding 'up' from Taranaki if I wasn't working at the V8's (too much gear for bike!) and I've lived in Hamilton for 20 years previously so I know the intersections you are talking about well. You're dead right about that Avalon Drive / Forest Lake Road intersection, people do some crazy shit on that one!
Forest Lake Road/Te Rapa Road can be fun too

    Said it before...

Armed people on random intersections. Shoot the fuckers if they run the red.

    Problem solved in hours!
