so the impromtu bid syndicate (for lack of a better phrase) is fraud?

I dont see any problem with a group of people buying a lot and making good deal for all. Of course, there is nothing stopping another group bidding against group A. Thats the way bidding goes, but if a group who all want similar items all bid and 1 person ends up with 10 items paying alot more than they otherwise would and then making it uneconomic for others to buy second hand items - it just doesnt make sense.

If the auction allowed bidders to take pick on how much of the lot they wanted and bidding is per piece then everyone can bid away and take away what they want.

No. A bid syndicate is legal, but you run the risk of pissing off the auctioneer if you run the syndicate blatantly.

Depends on what the auctioneer decides to do,i.e parcel of goods or individual.I would think if it is a winding up auction(company closing)then it would be best for items sold indevidually. The recievers have the say how they feel money is best raised in the end.In the case of multiple items for grabs, you need to work with several people or have an outlet organised prior to bidding,as you don't want to bid on say 4 pair of pants and have only 1 fit you,(costing slightly less than normal)and worry about flicking the others if possible to recoup costs. Then again you take the risk bid on items you want 1 of,flick the rest on trade me and hope.

I tend to agree...there is a specific process in an auction and if you stuff around with it things like this can happen. A lesson for all involved perhaps

Legal or not it's whether it's ethical to do this. I have observed an awful lot of practices since moving to New Zealand that smack of real tight fistedness that would (and do!) make a Scotsman blush.

This is yet another example of trying to get more from your buck than it's actually worth.

Always remember that if you get a real bargain it's generally going to be at someone elses expense - therefore karma will short change you at some point in the future.

Ever try to negociate a discount at a shop? Wonder if you thought about who is losing out because you are not paying full price.

I always barter - even when buying fish and chips I will try to get more for less. Sometimes (not often) it works and you get a bit ofa bonus.
getting away from the original question and would hate for anyone to smack me for being off topic.

I travelled extensively in Scotland and never found the tight-fistedness I'd been warned to expect (except in Glasgow - but that's only because a tight fist makes a better punch).

New Zealanders on the other hand are some of the stingiest people on earth.

    Yup.

So the general consenus is that it is more acceptable to go back on your word with a friend than lower the bids at an auction?

    Ah. I should have explained.

Kiwis are often the most generous people on earth. There's just a hard-core minority that doesn't like spending any money.
