Women Bikers v Dykes on Bikes!

There is a much considered opinion around, shared by a lot of Joe Public and an embarrassing number of male bikers,(and some people on this site), that a woman riding a bike, particularly if she is by herself, without a MAN around, to vouchsafe for her, is a Dyke on a Bike! Or a poseur trying to catch a man or whatever…

Its fucking embarrassing and pisses me off, no end!

OK. Riding a bike, by its very nature, is an activity that men are, generally, more in tune with. It is a state of mind and something deep in our psyche. Lets face it, we all know people that ride, but realistically, shouldn’t be anywhere near a bike! Ie they haven’t got “the right stuff”. It appeals (as a female aquaintance said) , to the “Mongrel in us.” Bike riders, by their very nature, are stroppier, less tolerant of idiots, have better motor skills (generally), think for themselves (well, most of us), are more self contained and generally, are more independent than mainstream!

Yes, a lot of women who ride are not heterosexual. Being different to mainstream, IMHO, seems to go with the scenario. Perhaps more gay women have these qualities due to their chromosomal differences.

But, there are a lot of women out there, who are heterosexual, who, like men, ride, because they enjoy it! They are not trying to be ‘noticed’ by guys. They aren’t trying to be one of the guys, or proving anything! They ride, for the same reasons, that we do! Only with a female bias, (lets face it, Women think differently to men), that is reflected in their riding style. Ever noticed, that most Women on rides are NOT interested in seeing who is quickest to the next stop, don’t want to kneedrag around every corner, are quite content to look at the countryside and get to where they are going when THEY want to. Not to say that there aren’t some very quick women riders out there . They are just different (Hoorah!), and get pissed off when they are continually marginalised, condescended to and looked down on by male riders!

A lot of guys out there are saying….Gee, I wish I had a female aquaintance...girlfriend.. wife, that rides her own bike…it would be neat! It is! But…realise that all those qualities that mean she's riding her own bike – not just being a “pillion pussy” (to quote another woman biker), can mean that you are in for an …interesting.....time,.

She will not put up with any shit from you, she will do what she wants to do and will be independent, strong willed ……and ……slightly loose!

Guys, if you are looking for a nice, compliant, gorgeous, meek bimbo and want her to ride a bike as well….forget it!.

It’s a hard road findin’ the perfect biker girl…but for those of you who are up to it - …YEEHAAHhhh!

And no, you poor sick fuckers out there, they aren’t all ‘Dykes on Bikes!’

Very erudite? I'll show this to my wife.......I'm sure she'll feel happier that the non-dykes that aren't 'owned' or 'with' someone aren't after me as a sex object...not that I would object to sex

BTW I have a friend who was one of the people trying to get her knee down every corner, and being first to the next stop. We went out in groups or sometimes just the two of us for a ride, and I thoroughly enjoyed myself in her company when I could keep up. So perhaps you have made the box for women's riding styles and desires a little smaller than the male box. They ride how they want for whatever floats their boat, just the same as the guys.

But don't put all us guys in the box of people who don't accept it!

Truth be told I am more comefotable riding with women as they generally have less to prove.

That and most stereotype male riders think I am a woman

Shit man, I didn't know there were so many issues with this subject!!. It never even crossed my mind that women in general are any less capable at riding than men. Althoe I do think most of them are definitely more careful and cautious than the guys.

I have however dreamed about meeting a girl who can really ride. Preferably at my level or some where around the little better or not quite as good mark. My dream babe to race with me in our bikes on the rides or the track. Its more fun that way cause there is more interaction between the two. Thats my thought anyway...

And the reason for me posting on a beautiful Saturday is that I am still working on the bike

I used to know a shelia that rode bikes,and worked on them too,she rode British singles and twins,could pull an engine or gearbox apart - and even put it together again,fix punctures and fit tyres,she really used to get down and dirty,and rode well enough to keep up with the boys.

Was she a dyke? ...dunno,but we've been together 26 years and have 4 kids.Girls on bikes don't get a hard time from me!

Just wanted to say I agree with all of that - except the "stroppy, less tolerant" bit.

I think Bikers tend to be a lot more patient (certainly most of the ones I know), and are less likely to, say, avoid taking responsibility for their actions or behave childishly in a given situation.

Right on ! And it's at it's worse when guys are in larger, mixed groups. When riders are neatly paired off like in the BMWOR or ULYSSES m/c clubs, everyone knows where they stand (heheh or LIE). But too much ambiguity exists around a single female rider. Who is she? What is she? Why is she by herself? What's wrong with her?

New Zealanders are too unsophisticated to cope with it.

I saw Billy Connelly on TV and he was joking about man's primitive thoughts :

Most male riders see a single female rider and think

Take a risk and include us, talk to us, share stories and perspectives on our mutual delight - love of racing or riding. 'snot difficult.

, I just find it amusing that so often when a woman complains about the way she's treated, it's by ALL men. ??

Surely if women want to be treated with respect as individuals they must do the same for us ??

I'm not sure I can take Billy Connolly seriously after seing him riding his monster trike naked except for some dodgy cowboy boots, a leather helmet and goggles.

What he also said in that tirade was that ..some women say ALL men are liars....not so....just the men that THEY attract....what are these women doing to attract these type of men?
