The British team that holds the world land speed record at just above the speed of sound are now going to have a crack at breaking the 1000 mph mark!

The engineering and physics for such a vehicle is real cutting edge stuff. Jet engine to take it up to 300 mph and then a rocket engine cuts in to take it supersonic. There's an 800 horsepower v12 race motor fitted to power the propellant turbo pump... wow!!!!

That must really piss the contenders off who have spent a fortune developing vehicles to break the existing record by maybe 50 mph and now their projects are pretty much dead in the water with this announcement.

Richard Noble's book on breaking the land speed record is one of the best books I've ever read. Getting the funding and developing the technology to achieve supersonic speeds is a gripping read - highly recommended.
