First of all a big thank you to the Vic Club for running the series and to all the marshals etc that volunteered their time.
I went into this round knowing I only needed 8 points to hold onto third place for the season, so there was not a lot of pressure except the thought that I had it all to lose if I totally stuffed up or had a mechanical problem.
The weather was looking ok and the track felt good during the scrub in session.
My goals for the day were to hold onto to third place and to continue to drop my lap times from the previous round.
Qualifying went well enough and so I was 5th on the grid and 2nd in pro twins behind Jarrod, with a time of 1.17.8s This only 0.4s off my PB so I was happy with that.
Sam Love was also ahead but as I found out at prizegiving later, he had been placed into F3 as he had a slick tyre fitted. A bit of controversy and Sam thinking I had protestedbut as I said to him I only needed 8 points to keep third, and his placing had no consequence to me and I only needed to finish one race. Incidentally, Sam has won every race he has entered this series and it was only due a crash and him missing 2 rounds that he wasn’t on the podium.
Race 1.
I stuffed the start hitting neutral and lost a couple of places. Daniel (disco dan) was ahead and has obviously found some more speed since the last round. I wasn’t able to make much of a gain on him and ran out of laps. Finished 4th but was good to see that I would now have to work a bit harder to beat Daniel and urge me to lift my game.
Race 2
I made sure I got a good start this time and slotted in behind Geoff Booth. I was determined to beat Daniel for third place and also wanted to try and stick with Geoff, as I know he is good for 1.15s laps.
I managed to stay with him for longer than any other time previously and so was pretty stoked and took third place fairly comfortably this time.
Looks like I will need new rear sets to raise the pegs a bit as they are scraping a lot now. I still have 4mm chicken strips front and rear so there is more lean angle left in the tyres yet.
I had one small moment at Turn 1 with the peg decked out and lost grip but the good old SV pulled itself together.
Best time of 1.17.119s so a new PB, I held onto third for the season and I’m very very happy.
Big thanks to my team mate Luke, my family, friends/supporters and sponsors - Teng Tools, Station Village Sports Cafe and Bar, Zany Zeus, Bridgestone NZ, Firestone Upper Hutt and those not listed (you know who you are)
Coming up I plan on racing at the Wanganui Cemetery Circuit, Manfeild Nationals, Pukekohe Nationals, Paeroa Battle of the Streets, and the Cliff Hanger Hill Climb.
So see you all around.
