I managed a high side coming out of Higgins in Post Classics qualifying. Gold CBR400. Was anyone up my tube to report on whether I got good air or not?

Been in hospital gettin broken thumb reattached and pinned so been off-line and didn't get back out unfortunately. I think my IRC rear tyre and new warmers may have been something to do with it! Side of tyre really smooth and glazed whereas up till now it has been rough and balled up. I've got a Michelin 2CT on the front and hd only a front warmer. The IRC used to give a few wiggles on the first couple of laps but after that has been fine. I'm wondering if it didn't like the extra heat?

Yep thanks Phil. Do I need to change the front too? Always best to do a pair? Do road tyres, or at least some of them, not like getting too hot? The 09's are basically road tyres I assume so wll they "go off" even on a 400 over aperiod of time rather than pretty well wear right down?

Nah, a 2CT should be fine, but the Bridgestones are pretty awesome, and a pair is usually mroe desirable than mixing.

Less track biased tyres certainly will go off if used harder than they were intended. Something I found out after going hard for 5 laps at Pukie using Michelin Pilot Powers (non-2CT)

090s will be fine on warmers, and seem to have a very wide operating temp range.. Someone once told me they were a spec tyre for some series in Japan. Not sure if it’s true or not, but they are really, really good.

didnt see you come off but you probably saw my near miss (highside/tank slapper) in the same spot a few laps later! i was on the silver CBR
glad your ok and not too hurt.... good tyre advice is important....

I did see your tank slapper Nicki, and wondered whether you were going to join me on the sidelines! Do you know what caused it? To be honest I was a bit pissed off that I high-sided, my first race crash, not for the obvious reasons but in my view it was avoidable. I'm a newbie, round 6 was my 4th event, my previous ones being rounds 2,4 (rained off),5 and 6. I was starting to get quicker, getting my knee down plus footrest plus boot toe on the right handers and working up to them on the lefts. Sure a few guys had said my IRC back tyre was a joke and I'd been using a warmer on my 2CT front but, apart from the odd wiggle on the warmup lap(s) it had been fine showing a nice tacky surface and balled up rubber out to the edge and hanging on when warm to those angles. Others had said on a 400 you should do a season on a set of tyres so I wasn't concerned and I was getting my times down to 1'28", cornering speed up and improving. Well this time, round 6 I graduated to a full set of warmers and 3 laps into qualifying the back skates out bigtime coming out of Higgins, no faster than I had been the meeting before and I high side and end up busting my thumb. Looking at the back IRC, the last 40mm or so are smooth and glazed with no stickiness at all, hence in my view the reason for the slide. I'd cooked the tyre by the look of it. As Phil says you need to show "commitment" to high side a 50hp 400 and certainly not to be recommended for a geriatric like me who's never going to push the absolute limits like you young lot, basically it shouldn't do it, unlike a 600 the tyres should do the season. The lesson is to get some decent tyres then if you arse off it's for a stupid mistake which should take a while at my "lack of bottle" years!

Hi I14, did'nt see you come off at Higgins but looks like you slid along way, was hopeing you were all ok, have to consider us old geriatric's these days hah !.
Dont now wether your running road tyres or not, but if you are, i used to run Bridgestone BT-O90's on the Zxr 400 when i started, great all round tyres for the track.
Mend up fast and i will catch up with you either Taupo at Xmas or next Vic series.( Bike 90 Zxr 400)

Hi Russell, unless I end up with a slim cast then I'm out for 6 weeks which means I'll miss the post-classics at Taupo so a real piss off. Yes I'm getting BT09's which Chris (VFR400 #35?) says are even good for knee down in the wet. Still a $1000 exercise, $500 for 2 tyres and the same amount for a helmet.Need my confidence back in the tyres though. I understand the 09's are good with warmers but I think some road tyres aren't namely my IRC!
