There are teams of tongan and samoans who do alot of door knocking trying to get work, especially tree or garden work. (but somehow they are also expert at whatever you need them to do.)
They claim the are from a church group (so they pay no tax). They are organised and work all over NZ and Australia.
These guys love to target older clients, can be very pushy with old ladys about getting trees cut for safety.
There favourite trick is to quote an amount then double or triple it when the jobs done, and often they just wreck any tree they claim they have "pruned". They do hundreds of thousands worth of damage every year.
I had an 80+ year old client here in Karori who they put in there truck and escorted to the money machine after they had hiked up the price and left a big mess afterwards. Then another team a few days later turned up to offer to clean up the mess cheap. I cleaned it up for free, and even if I had charged our full rate it would have been less than half of there price.

They have been done by target, fair go, 60 minutes, and a bunch of shows in Aus. They pay no tax, acc, and are still on the dole although its been estimated some individual members make over 100,000k in cash a year.
one lot hit an old guy suffering from dimentia near here recently something like $400 every time they mowed his lawn, and were doing it twice a week until all his savings of over 20k were gone. The guy was busted, was on the dole and got a slap on the wrist and is doing it again with his mates. One of the names they are currently using around wellington is COSAC, red trucks and vans.

They only work through door knocking and they get you to write a reference for them after they have finished the work, they hand you a pad and tell you to write about how good they are and stand there while your write, these are big guys, and they are very forceful. If your a guy they take fuck off pretty well, but they tend to really lay it on women and the elderly. The local chapter knock on every door from wellington to levin. Eastbourne, Waikanae, Kapiti, upper hutt, lower hutt, wainui, miramar, northland, the whole lot. They get next to no return work, hence the door knocking.

They make mega bucks doing this scam, they do a lousy job and are generally bloody expensive even when they carry no insurance, saftey gear, pay no tax and are claiming benifits. They actually create alot of work for me because we are called to fix there messes, but you feel bad being there when an old lady who just loved her garden has had it destroyed and payed a fortune for being another of there victims.

Ranty Dave .. we have those groups come around up here at least twice a year ... they are really good at what they do .. and remove trees help with yard work etc and do a great job of it. Thing is the ones up this way normally carry some sort of business card .. .so try and see if they have something.

Yeah, I'd be shit, eh I have a suspicion that any future career in science would be limited by the same thing.

    that's a good idea.
there's some other site(not sure what it's called) that you can look up vehicle history as well.

i wonder if they happened to have any garden tools in their van? i'd be a little wary if the didn't.
