Running the NZ superbike series?

I've been watching this forum for a bit, and decided now to introduce myself. My name is Nick, and I am a law student over in Cincinnati, Ohio. I am attempting to travel abroad the final semester of my degree, Spring of 2010. I race at the club level over here, and am wondering what it takes to race the NZ national series. I have been racing in the 600 class for about 4-5 years over here, as much as I possibly can while still attending law school full time. I am competitive, but I don't know how that transfers to the NZ nationals.

Now, I have no pipe dreams here, I just want to be able to qualify and race. I was planning on shipping over my own race bike, but would really like to find a race bike to lease over there. Also, I am not opposed to running your twins class on an SV650, but would like to hear your input first. Again, please remember I am coming over to finish my law degree, but would absolutely love to get a chance to race while in school. Any input is greatly appreciated, thanks for your time

Hi mate, it is simple really.

1) You would need to a letter of clearance from the Racing accosiation you are hooked up with ie, ama Canadian who ever it is, this letter proves your racing history and compitense

2) You then take a New Zealand racing license, and go racing

3) Get in touch closer to the time mate, I will do what I can to help get you out there

Hi man. Welcome to the forum. The reality is that getting into road racing here is very simple. Too simple some may say. You need to be a member of an MNZ (Motorcycling New Zealand) affiliated Club, have an MNZ licence, a bike that fits in a class and is appropriately prepared, then you turn up and race. There are no training or experience requirements. My understanding of the Nationals series is that qualifying means you have to have a time within 115% of top qualifier. (There may be a requirement to have done maybe 3 club level races, I believe this is the case for the Street races over here). I don't know how you would go in comparison to the racers in the Nationals. There are also several club series that aren't quite as competitive, but sometimes have bigger fields. The Pacific Motorcycle Club, Auckland Motorcycle Club, Motorcycling Canterbury and the Victoria Motorcycle Club all have things happening at various locations and times of year. Get googling mate.
Have a look on this forum at Shaun Harris' plans to run a 600 production series. It seems to be a very affordable way to get into 600 racing here. Good luck and I look forward to seeing you at the track.

I would say leave your bike at home and buy one for the season over here. The exchange rate is quite favourable at the moment (although hard to know what it will be in 12 months time) and for 10-12k usd you could pay for the whole season including buying a second hand bike from one of last years front running guys. They usually sell their 600's for around the 15-18k nzd mark after the season finishes. If you are a capable rider then you would be able to finish top 5 on a bike like that. If you are out to win then you best get in contact with someone like brian bernard or dave cole, but then you will be looking at upwards of 40k nzd.
