    So Sunday it is then.

I'm unclear on what's the plan Mark. Which side of the Karapoti r u talking about yours or mine? Run over Karapoti or just Odlins? I'd prefer to do Odlins.

If it is your side, then 10:30 is fine for me I'll go across Karapoti and meet u on the other side.

How about we meet at the first big river crossing on the Karapoti (Upper Hutt) end of the track at 10.30 on Sunday morning - thats about 1km in from the Karapoti car park.

Then we can head over the Pram track and Perhams Rd etc and out by the quad center at the Paraparaumu end and go for a coffee/early lunch at Paraparaumu or Waikanae and then up to Odlins Rd.

Anyone else who cares to join up for part/all is more than welcome.

For those who haven't done these bits before - the Karapoti/Perhams Rd bit is a straightforward ride on a 4wd track which will take 60-90 minutes. Odlins Rd is a nasty stony rutted 4wd track that will take 2-3hrs return.

    cheers

    Mark

Well I'll pull up at caltex around 10ish hang around for 10 or so mins and then
    head to the river.

Chucked a slightly less worn rear on today, everything was going fine until it came time to set the bead. (tubeless tyres)
Last time one C02 canister did the trick, popped the bead on 1st time.
    This time around 5 canisters
    • 1st one, Nothing moved
    • 2nd one, Slight flutter from one side of the tyre
    • 3rd one, Half the tyre on both sides pops into place, top part not set.
I'll just push on the tyre in the hope that it pops in. Push .... Push ..... POP.
The bit that was set, un-sets .......
    • 4th one, Nothing moved
    • Last one, used every spare I carry. If this one fails its drive into town or put a tube in .....
Click Whoosh, 98% set, quickly chuck on the electric pump to pop the last bit out.

Never mind, all good practice. Next time warmer tyres and more WD40

Mexican standoff - which bike will blink first?

Although the Beemer is squinting already so that's probably cheating.

This ride is now "unfinished bussiness" - we have to go back and "knock the bastard off"

You're all 'barstewards', going off for a ride like that without me.

    Bah humbug.

Paladins White rock report looked interesting for an easy day out. I've never been out that far and the track he looked up could be worth a bigger look.

I'm also interested in doing Lake Ferry round the coast where Jim went a few weeks ago. I've been along the dirt part of it but wasn't keen on doing the gravel on my own.

It wasn't really a Wellington ride but thats where I started from so... on friday went to Taupo via Wanganui, Paraparas, National Part (took a side trip up Mt Ruapehu to the carpark (top o' Bruce??) then back down, around western lake to taupo for the night. Sat morning made our way to Opotiki, where the road riders went off around the East Cape, and we hardy adventurers (Me on KLR and Al on KTM 950) went down the Motu. What a fantastic track, about 70kms of good(ish) gravel. After arriving at the bustling metropolis of Motu, a bit further down the road turned off onto Whakarau road which was about another 50 -60 ks of good gravel, which eventually bought us out at Te Karaka, not too far from Gisborne. Filled up there and then headed back to Kawakanaia Road, really rough seal awhich improved into good gravel, followed that through the hills to come out at Five Bridges, and a fang down a beautifully sealed road to Tologa bay, then back to Gisborne for the night, where we met up with the roadies. Sunday we went inland on Tiniroto Road to Wairoa, then down to Napier. Stayed on the main road till Waipukurau, then took the back roads through Wallingford, Wimbledon etc to Pongaroa, and down to Masterton. No gravel on Sunday.
Final thrash over the 'Tukas to home. Around 1800kms, the brand new IRC GP110 "Trail Winner" is completely stuffed, the KLR performed excellently and used less that 500ml of oil inspite of bouncing off the rev limiter through the gears and sitting on 130-140 for extended periods (Trying to keep up with the 1200 Bandit, R1, GSXr750 and 1200GS, as well as the aforementioned KTM)
it's not a bad thing till you throw a KLR into the mix.
those cheap ass bitches can do anything with ductape.
