Well I figured this thread would be light the fuse & run away for a while (as I will be off SI tomorrow).

Really I started it as a “what the hell are people thinking” muse, but if it makes just one person decide to wear some gloves or other decent gear then I think it is worth it.

Jantar: there is always some exception to the rule story that the ‘no seatbelts’ crowd have been pushing for some time, but no 2 accidents are the same & there is no way to say that the guy was worse off with a helmet on & PS helmets AREN’T designed to do that, well not since the Polstar abominations of the late 70s & things have moved on somewhat. Monumentally.

I’ve visited a friend in hospital who was ‘only’ going for a test ride so was wearing ½ face & overalls. He wasn’t so happy but got off lightly.

As I said before people race in full gear in crazy hot countries.

Oh yeah. If you see Aaron Slight, ask what he thinks about glove protection. He almost lost his race career by having his glove grind through & keep going when he got his hand caught under the bike. Only a very skilled surgeon got it working again. Glove technology has improved since then but please don’t tell me anyone you reckon you can crash every time without hurting yourself because you know the technique (better than Aaron etc?).
Don't you look at my accountant.
He's the only one I've got.

But I've crashed enough to know how to do it,I've been down the road enough in jeans to know you can slide a long way in them,I've learnt not to put my hands on the ground, keep my head up,basicly being aware in my crash situation - having an ''accident'' is under your control,so is controling what is happening during the crash.

Yep I've slid down the road a couple of times, and just got back on my feet and picked up the bike. However the accident that did the damage was a high side when a car nudged me from behind. Not a lot of time to control anything.

Thumbs break, and kneecaps whack the handlebars as you get thrown over the highside. Hands, head and shoulder bounce off the ground repeatedly as you roll. Even worse your bike self destructs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm not saying that everything was beyond my control, but any highside is going to hurt.

It will never happen to me.

I'm too smart, too lucky and too tough.

Safety gear is for pussies who don't know how to ride.

The only bike gear I wear is to look cool.
    ... and that's what I think.

    Or summat.

    Or maybe not...

    Dunno really....

My mate that got me into biking is missing a nuckle out of one of his fingers
After my first crash in december I'm missing a knuckle now too. Its still there as such, but it got pulverised and doesnt stick up at all.. small knuckle of little finger, big bloody dip, then the big knuckle of my middle finger.

3 Fractures including that one, and a big chunk of skin missing off the middle finger. That was wearing decent gloves. I dont think I wanna know what it woulda been like if I'd still been wearing the polyprop gloves I was riding around with when I first got my bike (I knew I needed gear, but the wallet said otherwise.. Got a full kit now thou but no bike Waaaah)

I'm very tempted to wear my gloves while typing this - they look so kewl sitting in my in tray. But the sundry nerds/dweebs/weirdos sitting here might think I was a bit odd.

Oh wait - they already do.

i'm guilty, i can be so a nail ( who knows whos reading) about protection. but lately it has been so dam hot. i thought i would ride without my gloves. and i was kicking myself over it. then it got hotter so i took my jacket off. riding around town is more dangerous than the open road but a dam site hoter too. when your sitting in traffic and the sun is beating down and you know you will have to wash the jacket again cause i'm sweating like a pig.

i know but i couldn't help it. protection is a must, and there is no excuse. or else i could be another statistic

Replace all words (gloves) with (condoms) makes for a much better read!
