just had a look in a honda dealer and they have a 1990 cbr250 for sale with 24000km on the clock.. would anyone have a better idea of wether this bike would last the distance or fall over and die with in a year? just curious cause i have no idea.

i figured out with my super intelligent calculator that this bike is almost 20yrs old.. how do these age i guess is my question? will these keep going or will compression etc go and then be a expensive overhaul?

Best 250 4 stroke ever made. Have never seen one with compression issues. Arguably best 250 ever depending on your criteria. Although, in my opinion I'd rather have a ZXR than the CBR single R, but definitely rather have a CBR double R than a ZXR. MC22 all the way.
Sold an engine off a write off (post HDTBoy) with over 100,000k's on it, was still shit hot.
I bought a written off one with over 50,000k's here in Aussie for $2500 for racing. Was running tar for oil when I got it. Tidied her up, made her naked, won races and prize money on it on Philip Island and Winton. Stock standard. Did have trouble finding second gear. That was only a problem on the launch in the races though. Obviously been mistreated. Still sold it back to the wreckers at the end for $2g, then they sponsored me $500 for the endurance race at the end of the year, so pretty cheap racing really.
When racing they sit at between 12 and 19,000rpm the whole time, so it's a good test. Passed flawlessly. I couldn't tell you how many races I'd done on CBR250's, maybe 40 or 50 would have won 1/2 of those races at least, and that's including F3 which I obviously didn't win any of, but was usually in the top half of the field.

If you're serious about buying one, I'll sell ya my 1992 RR for 4 grand. Shes got 55k on the clock, and goes as good as day one. I'm not too sure about the newer stuff but these older 250s can stand the test of time, well, from what I've seen - CBR/ZXR/FZR. I'd be confident mine will cover that distance again with periodic maintenance. Great bikes. Don't expect to be reading the same of those Hyosungs in 15+ years time lol.
I would, however, avoid buying a 20 year old bike from a dealer in an inflated market, with the added mark up of a dealer sticker price.

I have an MC22 (CBR250RR).
Bloody awesome bike, great power, great handling - could do with stiffer suspension on the front though, because sometimes when coming out of corners on scenic I get LIFTOFF!.
Mine has done about 65,000km, and is a 1991 model. Will definately last through to 80,000km+. Just get it regularly serviced, keep the chain oiled and the regular shit.
I would definately reccomend this bike to ANYBODY.

I've never understood peoples needs to buy from a proper dealer just so they can be assured of it's mechanical soundness. I'm not a mechanic by any stretch, and I have bought several bikes with no more information than a VIR (to check if money is owing on it), and never had any significant problem. (I do have a very basic proficiency and can tell if something is knackered, so long as it isn't *too* subtle)
If you think you won't be able to tell if the bike is severely fucked, post a thread up and I'm sure many kbers would be willing to help you pick out a steed that's not fucked. Dont blow an extra $2000 just so you can have 'peace of mind'. I mean come on, even a new motor + install costs less than that.

Find the tidiest one you want the cheapest you can until you need something bigger then spend the big cash...can get a nice bigger bike for 6 thou later on....
250'S have been to over rated for too long time the arse fell out of the over pricing shitty little bikes scam......
