Unhappy Broken NC30 :'( Please Help

    Hi everyone.

I just bought an NC30 (private sale). I had been riding it for maybe 30 minutes when it spluttered for a second (~mid of rev range) along the road a bit I had to stop at a red light and when the light turned green and I twisted the throttle the engine died.

The lights all still worked but the starter motor wasn't turning over at all.
After pushing the bike to a mate's house I realised that the frame was quite hot (the exhaust before the muffler was almost cold).

A few hours later I tried to start the bike again and the starter turned for a few seconds then just made a buzzing noise (flat battery?).

I've let the seller know what's happened and told him I'll call him tomorrow to talk about it further.

Would this be the ol' NC30 rectifier problem or something else?
Any ideas on tests I can do / what the problem is likely to be / repair cost etc.

And a big thanks to the people that pulled over to help me push the bike uphill into a side street while I was waiting for my brother.

    Thanks for your time,
    Darren

    -Edit-

I had test ridden the bike before I bought it and it seemed fine.
Full tank of gas, checked fuel cock, checked kill switch (by throttle)

hey dude! where abouts is it now? i have a few box's that compile almost a whole new NC30 which i could throw in the van and bring around to your mates then work on it with you, or bring back to my workshop where the tools may be more plentiful.

Otherwise my advise is: yes check battery, if reg/rec has blown it will have been overcharging the battery untill the battery boils dry and then it just begins to do exactly what you said - but are the instrument lights coming on and how well?

i have a spare reg/rec etc and a haynes manual/know how to test a reg/rec so im sure we will find out the issue soon enough.

    contact me on 021 16 55 668
    or 8180666

names Logan - if you call during today im at work and might be pushed for time but the least i can do is ring you back. cheers.

    Thumbs up

    Mate!

    That's awesome.
I'll give you a call sometime today to arrange something.

The bike's currently in Forrest Hill but I'll be moving it either to work (Albany) or home (Milford) today as we're hiring a truck for work today .

    Cheers,
    Darren

    -Edit-

I gave KK a call last night and his help was invaluable.
The bike's running now which is awesome.

    Thanks Kwaka-Kid

yeah i am interested as well, on the noobs ride my bike died for no apparent reson at the servo, when i tried to restart it after fuelling there was no lights or anything, so TS and I go to push start it and after moving it a little it was fine, weird.

Then last night was riding round turned bike off and came back about 5 mins later and turned ignition on and the lights came on then blinked off, so rolled it down the street and the lights came on again so i started it and it died after a few seconds, it did this a few times before it started normally and ran fine all the way home.

I was thinking maybe loose wire or something, but sounds as though might be reg/rec cooking batter?? Might have to design a beasty as one to replace the one in there at the mo

Mate Ill put money that your problem is a loose/broken wire.
It aint the syptoms of a reg rec problem -more likely the ignition plug has pulled loose

    Bugger Frosty steal my idea!

SaSlex- ive tried ringing yah cellfone recently mate, as firstly i have a few spare blinker units for your beast should that be the problem you txt'd me about.
and otherwise yes look down the Right hand side of the bike, where the side fairing has its main mount to frame, under that is your ignition wire, should be a red a blue and i THINK a black? either way there are 3, that connector block on one of my bikes has been cracked/broken and it wouldnt surprise me if yours is too or just missing the link that holds them together, pull it apart, spray CRC in both ends and jam her together, thats my bet, otherwise actual battery conneciton/positive to starter solenoid or the 30A fuse in that rubber housing could be cracked and touching sometimes etc.

    Take care.

yeah, did it again today was cursing a bit and remembered what frosty said, fiddled with the wires coming out of where the key goes in, hey presto lights come back on and away I go.

Stop for gas and again it goes, try same trick and it works but as I leave the servo bike dies then jumps itself back into life, rode home covering the clutch let it do it again at speed.

Going to try fix it tonight.

Blinker thing is just the switch unit KK, found the flasher unit as well and that was working fine, just the handle bar mounted switch is a bit dodge after gettin wet.

It appears that 4 out of 5 wires going into the rectifier had come detached. I'm not writing the problem completley off though until the bike gets a good lookover.
