A noob question about engine oil.

    G'day folks,
I have a Kymco Venox 250. Its a liquid cooled 4 stroke 250 thats due for an oil change. I am just wondering is there any specific brand of engine oil that would be best suited for my kind of bike? Are most motorcycle engine oil brands pretty much the same? which ones are the best? and are there any inferior products that should be avoided?
Sorry, if my question makes me look like an ignoramus haha..... but, you would be doing me a huge favour if you could give me any advice about this.
    thanks.

As long as you buy oil made specifically for motorbikes and not cars then you will be fine. Most people would be using semi-synthetic engine oil 10w-40 brands like Motul, Castrol etc. Make sure to replace the oil filter as they are cheap.

As long as its a motorcycle oil, and you precisely match the SAE spec, and exceed the API spec you will be fine.

SAE spec is like 10W40 (or whatever yours is - RTFM), so you use the same or close to it.

API spec is like CE/SF (C is for compression engines, S is for spark engines) so you can use an oil that is CF/SG API-rated in your spark-ignition engine as G is higher-rated than F.

In my opinion, a thinner (lower SAE spec) is better for high-revving engines coz it doesn't bind and wedge in the high-speed areas of the engine (like rings and big ends) and deprive them of lubricant, hence I tend to use 10W30 where I can, or one SAE level lower than specified.

If you are past the break-in period use Castrol Syntec 5w-50w.
Many of the Venox users use that brand and weight.

I have used it since 2003/2005 on my Venox(s) and have had great results.

Now, where did you get a Venox in Auckland ? Is it a ''grey'' import ?
Have they started importing them now ?
