Talking Touring route - Kihikihi, Wharepapa south to Mangakino

Members may recall newspaper publicity about the above road being closed because of a large slip. Motorcycles can go through during weekends. We were returning from Hamilton Ulysses Pureroa Forest rally on Saturday afternoon, 8 November. We had taken an alternative route south on the understanding the road was closed and the detour involved 7 Kms of gravel road
At the rally site we were informed by an attendee that he had come through that road the same morning after being told at the café at Wharepapa South that motorcycles could get through.

We had to try this for ourselves and confirm that there is a metal track around the slip which was easily negotiable by motorcycles and would be negotiable by any light motor vehicle. It is simply a case of ignoring the road closed and detour signs and proceeding through.

That gravel road they've used for the detour is actually great fun.
