North KB's Kai-Iwi Lakes Campout

Me and RIB have decided to finally hold a KB event in the 'Winterless north'.
There are two rides planned for the weekend that revolve around the lakes, being the stop off point on the Sat night for a soak and sleep for the night.

Yep, Ant and I are sticking our necks out as we decided it is about time you guys got you arses up here (instead of us). This is a two day ride with a camp over/BBQ/and BS night at the awesome Kia Iwi Lakes. Camping gear will be needed, but I will have the Ute down as far South as as the tea rooms on the AK side of the Brynderwyns for you to unload your excess gear onto. Food (drink) supplies can be picked up at Dargaville and put on the ute.
We will need to get an Idea of No. by the end of the week as we will need to book camping space by this Friday (11/02/05).

The ride plan for the Saturday roughly goes as follows:

9:00am: Meet up at Massey/Westgate Caltex.
9:30am: Depart Massey and ride via Old North Rd – Peak Rd – Kaukapakapa SH16 to Wellsford.
10:30am: Wellsford Caltex, regroup and meet any riders joining here.
11:00am: Depart Wellsford, ride SH1 to SH12 Maungaturoto turn off. Regrouping at the Brynderwyn Tearooms. My Ute will be here for those that wish to get rid of a bit of gear.
11:45am: Depart Tearooms and ride to Paparoa.
12:15pm: At Paparoa the ride can spit in 2.
Route 1: A longer ride to Dargaville (approx 105Km from Tearooms to Dargaville) with more twisties, going via the Pararoa-Oakleigh Rd on to SH1. Then down Loop Rd and on to Otaika Valley Rd through to Maungatapere SH14. Then to Dargaville. This route is recommended for the faster riders.
Route 2: This is a shorter straighter route (72Km from Tearooms to Dargaville) stay on SH12 via the Ruawai Straights. This is the way the ute will be travelling and is recommended for the slower riders.
All going well the faster riders going by Route 1 should arrive in Dargaville a little after the slower riders going via Route 2.
1:30pm: Regroup at Second Service Station West of SH12 and SH14 junction in Dargaville and then ride the Burger place on the turn off North for Kia Iwi and the Wiapoua Forest.
2:30pm: Having had lunch, we will head to Kia Iwi via SH12 (35Km), and set up camp there.
We should arrive at Kia Iwi before 3:30pm. After a swim there would be enough time to ride to visit Tane Mahuta in the Wiapoua Forest (50km from Kia Iwi).

Sunday I plan to take those who are kean up around Wiapoua Forest, through Opononi to Kaikohe. Down through my home Rd (Mangakahia Rd) , across and down Otaika Valley Rd. From there you will be able to head back home via SH1.

This ride will be awesome for learners and fast riders alike. If notified we could make arrangement for camping gear to be picked up, and/or a large tent hired/borrowed.

hell, I'm well up for that. Was thinking that it'd be cool to do a camp somewhere. I'll double check it but can't see why not. I'll confirm it for sure, but count me in for route 1. Good on ya guys

Will confere with mates cause we was going to have a camping trip out there anyway sometime .... so (shock horror) i might go in a cage with them and meet up with you guys on saturday......... if it falls to pieces i will seriously consider it aye

We stayed up that way this time last year - went to the Trounson Kauri Park...I was totaly blown away,never before have I seen a Kauri forest as it would have been thousands of years ago,it's nothing like Waipoua.I have always wondered how the birds could have lived in the dense secondary growth forests we see,let alone how the Maori could have coped in such conditions - the Trounsons Kauri park gives you an insight...it's so open,the mighty trees are spaced far apart,their huge canopies giving a cathedrial like feel...the birds fly! between the trees,the under growth has space to grow in it's own right...magic,totaly magic.

No,I won't be coming...there is a house that needs time and money buried into it,that's where my spare time is going at the moment.Pity...I coulda shown you all some very interesting roads between SHs 1,12 and 14.....and the longest beach in NZ,one day I'd like to fill my 20 litre Acerbis tank and go down to North Kaipara head.

wow, thats a great Idea - I MAY get to join you if I get a bike intime

, But great roads around kai-iwi, and lots off fun when all the smelly city folk are not around

On another note, RIB did you give me a hand with my 'key incident' outside mitre 10 ahwhile back? (black ZZR250) never caught the guys name, but he saved me alot of fiddling

You talking about Pouto Point there, Motu? Would like to take a few the Broadwood way to Kaitaia. The Russel Rd is cool too. As for the MX dudes, I'd send them out the back of the family farm.

We need more interest in this ride for us to bother book the camp. So far only three people have reg'ed for this ride (2 of them are Ant and me). We need some idea of possible numbers by midday tomorrow so we can book enough space. At least some feed back would be appericated so that we may better organise an event next time.

I would love to come. just that I need to find the time, as going to Melb for a week at the end of next week and then have big project on at work. If I can make it I'll..... but all depends on work

Due to lack of responce to reg'ing for this ride, We have decide not to book the Kia Iwi Camping grounds (still bring you tongs but as we will still head for the lake). Ride up will still follow Route, but for those who which to stay over-night we will ride to my place. Beds will be available, but Sleeping bags would be helpful. Beers are already in the fridge as long as you don't mind Speight's Old Dark, Mac's Gold (might pick up the odd Woody for the Bourbon drinkers). For those who only want a day ride, I recommend Route 2 as the quickist way back South. Will post revised Map as soon as I get time.
