    The Paparoa-Oakleigh Rd

Now this was an awesome road. Well worth taking instead of the SH1 if you have the time and are heading to Whg. Happily let Kevin and Tiller take the lead. It was not long before I got past by PT (followed a bit later by Zapf) on this medium twisty raod (hey I had a pillion I was responsible for). Turn towards Maungakaramea where we stop for PT to refuel.

Kevin (being the gentalman he is) kindly offer to give Jess a turn as Pillion on the back of his GXSR750. Promising not go any faster than Doug (me) on this rode. Well now de-pillioned I got ago @ showing Tiller that "Rox" and I are not total Nanas, and chased him down the road all the way to the Intersection with SH1

Once off SH1 and heading down Otaika Valley Rd I soon took the lead again (Very familiar with this road and no pillion). I stopped and wait for Tiller where the 40KPH corner is (the one that often has pea-metal on the apex), before head on to Maungatapere. Here we regrouped @ the Maungatapere Service Station (so Kevin could show Pam, his wife, the pillion he had picked up). After we moved all the tyre kickers away from Pam's 250 (which she has for sale as there's a 400 she's got her eye on) and said good by to Tiller, the remaining troup ("Rox" & me, Kevin with Jess 2up (think she was enjoying that), Zapf, PT & Ant) headed for Dargaville on SH14.

it turned out to be a damm good weekend of riding, thanks to all who were there and RIB for the planning / cooking / housing / leading!

I would be keen for more of northland rides and go even further north...

as for me and PT we departed RIB's place and cruised most of the SH1 back to wellsford until we parted ways as PT had to be back in Auck by 12 and I went for a damm good blat down 16...

    Maungatapere To Dargaville

After tell everyone that I would be ride this next part of the ride bit slower than the last section as there is more likely to be a cop, I cruised off at what I thought was a sensible speed (80-90MPH) and soon found that only Kevin (on KB as nzkalt61) with Jess 2-up was behind me. Stopped opposite the Tangi Pub (Tangiteroria) waited for the other to turn up. Zapf didn't take too long and I waved him and Kevin to carry on. Well I should have had a beer while waiting for PT and Ant (maybe I overstated the cop thing ).
As soon as I saw them I moved off again trying not to put too much space between us, but in the end I started to get curious as to how far ahead Zapf and Kevin were now. Well I only just caught site of them as I hit the SH14 Dargaville Staights (between Awakino Point and Dargaville). We pulled into the Dargaville Service Station and wait for PT and Ant (they don't take too long this time ). By this time It was well over due for lunch so we went over the bridge to Mangawhare (still part of Dargaville) and had lunch at Fast Food (yep that's what it was called ). Here Jess tells us that we have made Maungatapere to Dargaville (55Km) in 20mins (so much for riding at a sensible speed hey).

    Wait there's more to come.

    "Roxanne's" Fuel Leak

Before we left Fast Food, Ant pointed out that I have a fuel leak (fu*k, fu*k, fu*k). "Roxanne" had got serviced last week and I had only pick her up from the shop on Friday. I have sent her back to the shop, were I have just found out that the tank plate for the mounting bracket has broken @ the tank (which is the cause of the leak). The shop is get a 2nd hand tank @ cost for me ($250) and hopefully will not charge for fitting it as they may have "assisted" with the bracket braking while servicing the bike (hey "Rox" aren't young so the bracket was probably going to go anyway). There was some damage to my fairings after return from the shop (I found that Sat morning and had to stablise them before going on this ride). I had rung them about that first thing on Sat before going on the ride. They are plastic welding these for me @ their cost (I'll repaint them as I have had to repair those fairings before).

    The Lakes

After a very late lunch, Kevin had to leave the ride to get back to Whangarei in time for milking. This meant I had Jess again . Who need “Old Men’s Day” (Billy Connolly) when you can have a hot young biker chick like Jess behind you. Boy Ant, you’ll be looking forward to your next bike so that them dirty old bikers don’t pinching your hot young biker chick .

It was after 2:30pm and the weather was getting real hot when we got under way again. There is a mix of easy bends and straight on this part of SH12 so Jess was getting to feel the power of “Roxanne” as this is her kind of road. On @ least one straight along here she reach 120MPH. There was the odd road repair but nothing to get too worried about.

Let the group re-gather at the turn off for Kai Iwi Lakes and then head down this road. It wasn’t long before I got past by PT down here (actually it was a little naughty of PT as the corner was a little blind).

It was around 3pm when we got to the lakes and it didn’t take us long to strip off and jump into the lakes. After hot leathers the lake water was just bliss The Lake temperature was so good that we didn’t feel like getting out and back into the bike suits. After quite a bit of mucking about in the water we remounted our trusty steeds and headed for the forest.

Awesome ride.It was really good down the paparoa oakleigh road,It was in alot better condition than when I rode it 3 or so years ago.Had a great blast down there.
Yeah RIB I noticed your headlight not to far back on the Mangakaramea road nice road that.
When we got on the otaika valley rd & I waved everyone past I was following kevin & Jess & a bird flew up under his front wheel & disapeared, it didnt pop out for atleast 1km or so.Poor thing must of had the ride of its life.
Wish I could have come over to the lakes but I had to help a mate bleed his clutch & brakes on his gsxr1100.
Oh well next time when hopefully we get some more KBers up this way.

Err yeah.... not a great moment, but I'd committed, so there I was.....
That and Roxanne was so bloody slow through the corners, but with enough grunt to keep me out on the "straights"

    The Forest

With "Roxanne" 2-up again we headed to Waipoua Forest. With the road relatively open here it was easy to keep the smaller bikes behind me, but I knew that would all change as soon as we got in to the forest with it's tighter twisties. It was not long in the Forest before I got taken by PT. In fact with the tight blind corners, the occational pea-metal and being 2-up, It was not long before I had even let Zapf and Ant past. Not to woory as soon as we clear the Forest (I throught) we'll pick them off again. This didn't go quite to that plan as the was some freash seal on the other side with still some pea metal in the apexs (what pea-metal said PT when we stopped next ).
Clear of the pea-metal and with the odd straight a long Waiotemarama, the threesome of Jess, "Roxanne" and myself (always wanted 2 girls at once ) soon pick the boys off one by one. Up the hill and round the corner and there in front of us the Sand Dune at the enterance of Hokianga Harbour just "POPPED" in to view (always starteling how it does that you fell like your going to end up in the harbour as you come up that corner).
Regathered at Opononi and got instructions on how to get to Jess's parents' house.
