Reporters can't get a story straight. Let me tell ya a story...
Riding to Greymouth for the street races one Friday one of us crashed near the Pancake Rocks. Broke his collarbone.
The newspaper report: A racer crashed on Saturday during the racing breaking his collarbone.

    Close.

WHICH IS FUCKING SHOCKING YA LAZY FUCKERS!!!!!!!

but for last few months i have only seen one positive article about police, wihch were some new recruits all smiling an so on.... just they wait until they have been to a few accidents is say, then they wont be smiling but.......
This says more about the newspaper industry than it does about the police.

SLOWER RESPONSE TIMES FOR PRIORITY ONE CALLS SHOWS CLEAR NEED FOR MORE FRONTLINE POLICE AND FOCUS ON ADEQUATE RESOURCES

“The slower response times for Priority One calls shows a clear need for more frontline police and a focus on adequate resources for that area,” Association Vice-President, Richard Middleton said today

Mr Middleton was responding to the statement from the Minister of Police yesterday that Police response times are slower than target times set.

“We know our frontline Police do their difficult community job well with the resources that they have. However most, if not all, additional funding in recent years has been tagged to specific areas and frontline police numbers have been ignored with staff continuously robbed for other initiatives,” said Mr Middleton.

Mr Middleton said, “In Australia they have 1 Police officer to every 461 Australians. In the UK & Wales the ratio is about 1 to every 406 people and in the USA their ratio is about 1 to every 432 people. Here in NZ, we have one of the lowest numbers of Sworn Police to Population in the English-speaking world, with 1 officer to every 543 New Zealanders.*

“NZ would require another 1300 police officers, just to come up to Australia’s ratio.”

“The Government needs to invest some of that budget surplus in increasing general frontline Police numbers and improving their resources,” said Mr Middleton. “If they do this, then the Police will be better able to respond to all calls, not just those that are Priority One and the NZ public will feel safer.”

Sure they were traffic units but surely a case of child abduction is more important than traffic fines? The arguement was that as the traffic units are funded by LTSA they have to focus on traffic matters only.
In my experience when a child goes missing absolutely every unit in the area gets involved. I can't speak for other districts though.

my thoughts any way... I mean, if someone is HP and can't take prints or answer a burg call... whats the point!
As long as the police are policing the roads there will be designated traffic units. These cops should on the whole stick to their core functions but need to be available for urgent jobs outside of the traffic area. They shouldn't be getting tied up in taking historic burglary and theft complaints because there is no issue regarding safety that requires urgent attendance. If attendance times for burglaries etc are to be addressed it is a matter of needing more resources on the GDB side.

Some traffic bosses are refusing to let their troops attend non traffic jobs and reaming them out if they do attend. Thats the problem that needs to be looked at and more General Duties staff too please.

While not media sensationalism this time, Ron Marks (National MP) was on breakfast this morning saying that he had some leaked memo's from cop bosses to traffic patrol telling them not to attend any incident's that are not emergencies.

And good on him for actually looking into the matter and having some proof before going to the media.
