If that includes all the prep work, and he does a really good job, then it sounds fairly reasonable.

Oww.. yikes! Is that just one solid color, and a basic color? And just the fairings? Prices vary on color and amount of work involved and amount of paint needed (particularly if it's an expensive color/type of paint)

Standard ass straight black pissy pennies. But by comparison pearl trans.. don't know what they call it actually.. but at trade price it's $500 per half liter!

One of my club mates brother in law quoted me $60 to take my tank back down, repaint it a solid black, shove on my custom decal graphics (those cost me $90) and then clear coat it. And it's not a half assed job either, I've seen a Harley he did for the club mate and it was brilliant (solid black with the pearl flecks).

    Just to put in perspective!

Not much of a perspective dude! I painted my own tank, bellypan in black basecoat and alternator cover, clutch perch in matt 2K. Total cost to me was $100 and that's cutting it to the bone.
Your mate's bro in law obviously likes working for naught or someone else is missing out!

Depends on quality of materials and amount of prep. A grand is cheap for mate rates. If quoted a grand after walking into a shop I'd be wary.

If it's blue, then that's pretty reasonable. The blue (done properly) is a black primer, then a coat of blue with silver, then a coat of blue with purple tint, then a coat (or two) of clear.
Done the quick way, it's just mixed to almost-but-not-quite-match (you can't match it exactly, due to the multiple coats). Looks OK if the whole bike's done in it, otherwise it shows in the sunlight.
    ... and that's what I think.

    Or summat.

    Or maybe not...

    Dunno really....

hey, similar question...(sorry thepom!! not trying to hijack or anything) except mine is for the left hand fairing on a cbr 250r. Got quoted $400+ to put a pearl white and some blue over perhaps half the fairing. Never had a paint job done before so don't know if this is fair (though from the previous comments seems like a predictable price).

    Cheers guys.

You would be hard pressed to do even half a job with the shittiest materials for that price.

People have wildly varying views on what is a 'good' paint job.

Well that harley he did, and it was a more complicated job, looked brand new out of the factory.

Anyway, dont care - I'm getting the paint job free now through a club member who is a painter.

Oh yes.. and a guy at my work used to paint hot rods. When talking to him about doing my bike he said with a paint shop I should be able to get the whole bike done under a grand (solid black) and he then pointed out he has all the gear still and if I wanted to do it with him as a weekend project (ie.. learning about it from him to) it'd only cost $100 in paint and we take our time as an alternative to taking it to a shop

I don't suppose you'd have a code for that blue would you? I wouldn't mind looking it up!

Bike is in paint shop now.

Getting taken down, bondoed, painted, tank decal added, red pin stripes on front fender (if he remembers lol), clear coat, then taking clear down and buffing and clearing again.

ETA end of week for all parts except rear fender which I'm doing next week (waiting on art work and one of the club members to give me a hand getting it off the bike).

    Will post pics

Yeah I dunno, already fair busy. Lots going on with work, and there's a lot involved with running the club considering what we get up to.

And work I do on my bike is progressive and I come up with new ideas and then evaluate if I can do it with the money and tools I have. Toying with the idea of fitting some generic harley style mufflers onto it at moment, and also getting front fender cut to a different shape.

BTW, CKMC new years party on new years eve if you want to come.

    Edit -

I see KB has a blog function.. haven't figured out how it works yet if it works. Maybe could do a blog on the work I've done on the bike, and put a link in my sig?

    Edit 2 -
Got it going. Gee.. me blogging... must be the end of the world coming.
