Speaking of air cooling. Long time racer and enthusiast Howard Gifford built an incredible air cooled rotax twin 440 that recently won the vintage World Championship of snowmobile racing. These are modernized air cooled engines and very impressive to see. Click image for larger version.

    Nordlock / Skid Marks

TZ, I would have thought the double nut too but my KTM’s shifters use the Nordlock washers and have proven very reliable.

Frits, skid marks on the track or….:

Unprecedented amount of rain for Auckland, Northland and the Coromandel area in the North Island. Most people are Ok but some unlucky few in low lying areas got flooded or hit by slips in hilly areas. 3 months worth of rain in one night. The news shows the worst of it. Ironically the South Island is suffering a real dry spell. For you're own safety, stay out of fast flowing flood waters, don't go kayaking.

You win some, you learn some. I learned a lot. Like avoiding shrunk-in cast-iron liners. And air cooling in general. And clutch cables that are thinner than brake cables. Pulling the clutch because of a seizure doesn't do much good if the cable snaps. I survived without a scratch but it left the longest tire skid mark I've ever seen.
Frits, I guess that's why Saabs and DKW/Auto Unions had a freewheel clutch in addition to preventing loss of lubrication on a closed throttle down hill runs. Can't have those skid marks.

In 27 years I never had a 50 seize. Although the only time I had a steel liner fitted I paid for it but left it on their desk. Hopefully as a warning to future customers.

I know Ken, I used a DKW 1000S two-stroke triple as a basis for my rallycross car. Nice little (and light!) vehicle; I still hold the track record in my home town .

You are clearly a man of taste, Ken. But the 53 years that went by since that picture was taken, turned black into silver. And to anticipate your next comment:

    A question for Frits:
I seem to remember that you had a major hand in writing the rules for the Freetech 50 class.
I wondered why you effectively eliminated cast iron cylinders or cylinders with a steel liner, by allowing no overbores past 50cc.
Even the first oversize on a Honda NSR50 (39.25) puts it over 50cc. Was that deliberate?

Now I can get on with setting up the jetting and ignition timing.

Engmod-2T suggests that 32BTDC is the go. I have been slowly advancing from the std 18deg 2 deg at a time.

I have not got to 32 yet but the top end power improves every time I take a step.

I take it you mean 32 degrees at the start of the ignition curve with it retarding with higher revs other wise the cooling ability of methanol is amazing.
