I do need to go out and get some new gloves....or a few pairs. when they get soggy i tend to neglect them for a few days...really bad i know. the last time i binned they really saved my skin...upto where they met my jacket..had a little wrist rash.
That's not so bad - at least he had a good reason why gloves are not suitable for him.
For me:
My minimum is a full faced helmet, gloves, boots, Dragin Jeans and leather jacket. I wear these things even on the hottest summer day. For cold weather & longer rides I also have the option of adding a back protector and either cordura or leather pants.
I ride a scooter, but it is 400cc and I ride at least the speed limit most of the time. Even at 50-60kph in a 50kph zone I would hate to think of what the road would do to gloveless hands!
I don't even like to think about open faced helmets. T-shirt & shorts are not appropriate motorcycle gear. If you value your skin you don't ride with it exposed.
I never try to get people to do anything - I give an opinion and people are free to ignore it at their own risk. If someone rides without gloves and comes off then it is no skin of MY hands.
I have winter gloves and summer gloves and wear one pair or the other (depending on temperature). I would advise everyone to wear the gear, but if you don't then please remember - often people are the author of their own misfortune, sometimes it is possible to take sensible precautions and reduce the risk of very painful injuries. I ain't going to come 'round to dress all you fools, make your own decisions and live with them!
I have this crazy hope that someone will at some stage reflect on my advise and wear the gear, then be saved some skin in an accident. Just remember, it's better to wear the gear and not need it then to need it and not be wearing it.
You would never catch me in anything less than kevlar lined jeans, boots, jacket, helmet and gloves.I only ever use the jeans for commuting, the instant that a ride is suggested I go home for leather first.
It's only hot when your not moving.
BTW. main street Whangarei yesterday 86 or 7 cbr600 helmet not strapped up,bare feet, nylon shorts and wifebeater. SOOO COOOL.
It's all fun n games till the MODS turn up!!!!
Dont get me wrong, i am a ATGATT person, and i dont think i have ever ridden at more than 10kph with shorts on but i am mearly saying i would rather have skin grafts over the rest of my body (well the bits that would get roadrash anyway) than lose use of my hands.
And also remember that if you are carefull there is every possibility tht you will not crash.
Well as a not-so-bulletproof teen I was trashed from behind by a car and was wearing no gloves and shorts. Still have some road rash up one leg 20 yrs later but strangely there was not a mark on my hands.
I am generally ATGATT now except with two exceptions:
1) I work in the islands a bit and ride a scooter with no helmet and gloves ... I would never do this everwhere else ...
2) cycle nearly every day in fox mtn gloves (fingerless) and hit 68kph down the local descent - but there's only so much gear you can wear cycling and not being trapped under a 200kg+ motorbike does make it more likely you'll bounce clear and get less gravel rash in some cases ...
Even so seeing people on bikes without the appropriate geat makes me mad.

Gloves and helmet are two areas i will never skimp on (AGV and Dririder summer for me) also a wise man once told me, get gloves that fit, and do the strap up EVERY time u put them on, as they can rip off your hands when sliding down the tar.
I occasionally dont wear gloves or jacket, but thats just for strops round the block, i once fell off at 140ish in shorts and t-shirt in my youth, still have scars on my hands, arms, back and arse to this day, its a good reminder of what not to do.
I had to get tar seal scrubbed out of all my rash, and tweezered out of the gaping wound in my hand.....not fun
will see if i have any photos floating around.
Oh and just to continue the feeling towards scooter ridersseriously what goes through those guys and girls heads?
