    Pad replacement?

Neither of my manuals are being very helpful with this.

It would be safe to assume that the area the red lines are indicating is the very edge of pad wear, the point upon replacement?

If that's the case then they seem to be a fair way from replacement. However, all that scaring looks pretty bad to me, normal or time to replace them?

Scrub/wire brush them up. Bit of a spray with brake clean, n bung em back in.
Look about 50% worn to me.

That groove in the middle is the wear indicator, is it not? My pads usually have little red dots on them, but I think my Haynes manual says something about that centre groove. Once there's no groove left (even on one part of the pad), then it's time to replace.

They do get pretty carved up, especially with the sort of discs that we have after thirty years of abuse -- if they weren't scored, then they wouldn't be mating to the imperfections in the disc correctly, and you'd have less surface area and less grip. Yet another problem with disc brakes -- components don't last long at all! As long as both sides are wearing evenly then I wouldn't worry too much. Brakes felt fine to me when I used them -- what made you pull them off?

The middle groove was full of brake dust and is now a lot deeper. I took them off due to squealing on braking. Gave them a good clean with a toothpick and a brush, I'll grab some brake clean later in the week. I'll see how she sounds when I ride to work later.

    Thanks guys.

Put a smear of Copaslip on the face of the piston (where it touches the pad), that should help with the squeal.
