    Ducati bevel gearbox problem

Was out on the old bevel recently and lost all gears except top.

I have pulled the selector mechanism and at the end of the selector drum there are 5 equally spaced holes, 4 containing hardened 12 x 4 mm pins.
The last hole has no pin but the cover that goes over the lot has a brazed up 1/2 a pin in it...does not look like a factory job ( mind you...never can tell with Italian bikes).
I'm guessing that this bodge broke and has caused the trouble.
Oddly the manual shows 4 pins only.
    Anyone been here???

What is the shift lever doing.

The shift drum and the way you describe is as per the factory, although the brazed pin on the end plate may have been an update,i think it used to a crimp in the end plate to locate it.
Check the hairpin spring has not caused the problem for starters.

I would have said try Bevelheaven but some guy called JC who seems to be having the same problem has already asked
"If you can make black marks on a straight from the time you turn out of a corner until the braking point of the next turn, then you have enough power."

    guilty...just covering all the bases.
I took pictures as I pulled it apart.
No circlip on the selector gear may have been the cause, but its missing!!!!
The motor was rebuilt a few years ago by ( insert anonomous ChCh bevel specialist here) but I'm sure they would have fitted it as its only started to play up recently.....false neutrals....then top gear only.
The brazed pin seems to work...but looks bodged.
I have been trying to set it up for a couple of hours but it won't always select 1st time. Bit hard to do just turning the rear wheel with one hand and the gear lever with the other.

Ok, i was basing my reply on all the bits being there.
You want to make sure the shift drum end thread is oil free and has a little blue loctite to retain the cheesey screw.
I am not sure about the earlier kick start 900's but seem to remember there might have been a shim under the circlip.

What is that hanging out of the lower part of the upper gearbox bearing ?

The manual says there is a shim,

bit of an optical illusion , just oil and the flash.

I'll have to get the missing bits and have ago at setting up the linkage.
    cheers for your input.

Selector not centered, maybe broken spring or walked out due to no circlip, adjusting the eccentric for equal engagement on the up and down shifts is a bit of a mission but we know these things, call me John, Onehunga Bevel Doctor at your call......all it takes is cold beer
