I had cheap braces on both times, so now I want some 'proper ones'.

Have a look on tardme (search in bike gear with keywords Knee and brace): there are a bunch of different ones which will give you an idea of the range and almost inevitable quality differences.
I suspect that it will be a case of you get exactly what you pay for, and a good orthopaedic brace will be EXPENSIVE. Not, however as expensive as surgery..... one suspects.
I would go talk to a LBS about what you want, why you want it, and take it from there. No way would I buy something like this without trying it on with all the rest of my gear either....

Used one for a year after a knee opp. Was racing DH mountainbikes at the time and found the brace very comfortable and worked very good as I was a little crash happy at the time
But if you can try on a few different ones to see which you find comfortable and make sure their comfortable in the gear you will be wearing.
Unexpected Spanish inquisition
CTi are generally acknowledged as the best (they make medical braces as well as sports ones) - these are the brand that Darryll King imports, if you want a cheaper alternative Asterix are the next best thing - I believe they are still made by CTi or a parent company, but sold through different outlets and are not custom fitted like the CTi's.
Pretty sure you can get a subsidy of some sort if done through your orthopaedic surgeon/doctor etc.
Best bet is to contact DK and he should be able to fill in the gaps in this info.
