    Quick question on leather brands

So im looking at getting some new gear and i was hoping for some help in the form of what are some good relatively fail proof brands that im not just paying for the little brand tag that costs the most.

    Cheers

    With apologies to Quasi...

I have ordered leather jeans from Celtic Leathers. Having no intention of queering Quasi's pitch I have discussed mentioning this here with other KB members and the consensus seems to be, "It's a different market".

So depending on your budget you may or may not be interested:

i've not long scored myself a 2 piece teknic chicane suit, after much research.
i didn't want anything totally race spec'ed,and i wasn't really keen on spending 2-3.5k on leathers either.it's got armour in the shoulders, back, elbows, hips, knees, and shins, and feels VERY comfortable.
and at $900,i don't think i could have got anything better to suit (no pun intended) my needs.

    worth a look.

It very much depends on what you can afford. Advice: get the best you can.
Top range stuff from Quasimoto as already mentioned. His gear is probably cheaper than the more well known international brands, but probably better in quality. Less expensive and also reported to be reasonable quality, from others on this site are: 1Tonne, MohsinBikeWear, Lifestyle, who are on this site and also on TradeMe where you can see their range. (Google is your friend).

I was in the same situation as you just recently. Without seeing the gear from Mohsin or 1Tonne which I was seriously considering, I bought two sets of gear and back protectors from Quasi. My wife and I visited him and once I had seen the gear, I decided it was exactly what I wanted. My choice was also based on his reputation for quality from others on this site.

Good luck with your choice. There are a few good suppliers out there now, and it is about getting what you can afford, and will do the job.
    Cheers.

I got a really nice leather jacket and pants off quasimoto.Just treated with sno seal this weekend and it looks like new .Not bad for a jacket that gets used everyday in all weather. After having it a year now nothing has surprisingly broken unlike a lot of other gear I have used .

Whatever you get Oli, the NZ safety standards must comply with the following CE numbers for gear

    Jackets & pants: EN 13595

    Gloves: EN13594

    Boots: EN 13634

    Helmets: Snell (M2000) European (ECE22.05) Australian (AS1698)

Have a good look around this site..

In addition to the above props to Quasi, I've got a Teknic suit and a Alpinestars suit. THe Teknic has had a hard life and has been crashed a lot. It has held together well. I've had the stitching in the thighs redone.

The A* hasn't gone near the ground, and in my opinion, isn't as well built as the Teknic suit. (Both are pretty entry level models).

Hot day up here in Whangarei ....

I went for a ride today, after not riding lately because of a very sore right hand still. I found that using the Quasi leathers, I was able to open up the zips on the sleeves which worked well in circulating air as i rode, keeping me at a good temperature. As I haven't been riding hardly at all since I got the leathers, I was concerned about how hot I was going to be. However wearing the Aegis back protector, which allows air to circulate between it and your back, with the sleeve vents open, I had good air flow. I could have got more air flow if needed by opening up the back vents, but didn't need to today. Maybe when it's hotter.

This is just a further plug for Quasi's gear for those considering buying leathers. Thanks Bret. It is very good gear. Comfortable, designed and made well, and functions just as it should.

Mate if you are still considering what to get ... I suggest you get in touch with Quasi and check out the jackets, trou, one piece (if you are a racer), and the back protectors!
    Good luck.
    Grant.

Well if you have an "off" like I did in Cordura jacket and trou, you come to realize that while it may be nice and light to wear, and is pretty good in the rain .... it doesn't really look after you that well at all sliding on the road. The armoured areas may perform ok for a short distance .... but in my opinion, cordura doesn't wear very well at all against tarseal. A leather area on my cordura jacket was slightly scuffed, but the cordura area on the back that touched the road for a short period, was really worn, ... and almost completely though.
Others here have mentioned coming off in town at between 30 - 40kmh, and ended up with a scar from their cordura gear wearing through.
Their experience, along with my own 3 weeks ago, led me to get leathers and I am very pleased with my decision!
    Good luck.

    A big +1 on that.....
Life has taught me that you get what you pay for....cheap = cheap.
A lot of folk like Quasi's stuff, for good reasons. A known brand will be always be better than a cheapy...stuff like Nortech should be avoided I reckon as a mate has got a one piece & the zips are shit & the stitchings coming undone....& he's not fallen In them !!
A good 2 piece leather suit is what yuo want I reckon, with the zip that runs right the way round, not just the 6 inch zip thats on alot of gear.....means you can track day or race in them if you get the urge...
I got a excellent 2 piece Dainese of trademe for 350...
