    Speedo is WRONG!

    Hey,

ive just been riding on my FXR150, and was cruising past one of those radars on the side of the road that display ur speed and tell u to slow down. my dash was showing 55 but the radar clocked me at 46. watever speed i go i always seem to be at least 8km/h difference. is this easy fixed or do i need to take it to the garage?!

    Cheers

    Hey mate,

ALL FXRs have it... and i wouldnt waste my time getting it fixed. they have a 10% inacuracy normally.

just learn to ride with it. Watch it when you change bikes.. so you don't get snapped like i did.. my old KR150 had the same problem.. so i used to always cruise around at 65 (that was about 55) when i jumped on my brothers bike.. 65 was actually 65! DOH

Pretty normal really. That differential may be a little large in general though. You can get a speedohealer (do a search on this website) or you can just mentally adjust.

Mentally adjusting isn't too bad, you get used to it fairly quickly It helps if you have someone else with an accurate speedo, or use a GPS to help you 'calibrate'. Once you've got an idea of your speedo readings at 50, 70 and 110 you can figure out the rest fairly well.
Often speedos will be less accurate at higher speeds, so my KR indicates 140 when I'm doing 110, but only indicates 60 when I'm doing 50.

They're made that way so FXR150 riders can say "Cruises comfortably at 105kph"

steved is right...get a speedohealer from www.speedohealer.com. I had an FXR150 and that thing was so simple to use etc... fantastic... You don't realise how much less stressful it is not having to do mental maths.

even when you KNOW your speedo reads 10% high you still slow down going past the cops

    Hi

Many bikes have high speedo readings - also revcounters are just as bad!
My RG50 speedo reads 10% high at least and my Furano tacho reads 10% high.
A lot of bikes now get really out when sprocket ratios get changed.

Aftermarket ones are often really accurate.

    Cheers

we had that problem with our FXR ... 55 was 50 and 110 was 100 ... I learnt to calculate and worked it out. Wasn't an issue

    Hi Liam,

If your talking about the ones in Tawa forget it. There are 4 of those things around Tawa. One from Linden, one on Duncan St, one by the squash club and one as you come into Tawa from Porirua. Every one of them reads a different speed.
I thought I was having problems with my first bike until I checked them out with both the car and the bike.
I got my wife to do 30, 40, 50 etc in the car with me following. I learnt my speedo and it's descrepancies. I then made allowances for those 4 signs. Don't get too hung up on them. They are only a guide.
I'm only wearing black until they develop something darker

yeah i strapped my GPS onto my VFR; it reads high by about 12%
the RF is better, only high by about 7-8%

ya just get used to it and learn to know where the limit is
