    Re-chroming or a new fork?

One of my front forks it pitted to the extent that fork oil is now leaking from the fork seal. (The fork seal was replaced 4 weeks ago). It's bad enough for something to have to be done about it. The options are:

    > A new fork ex Japan for $450 (we've tried to locate a second hand one in NZ and Aus with no luck.)

    > Getting the old fork re-chromed for about $340 (and bike is off the road for two weeks)

Has anyone had re-chroming done like this or have any recomendations?

I've tried it on a couple of different bikes now and both times ended up buying new fork legs because there was a plastic bush inside the fork leg that the damper sat in, and it would most likely be destroyed by the chroming process.

You're not going to know until you pull it apart (or check the manual).

I priced up a set of tubes a few years ago for a old Kawasaki and they were a lot cheaper than a re-chrome. Remember to convert for our crappy dollar too.

Well after checking with the mechaniky fella and hearing that the re-chroming works 90% of the time ... I've ordered the new fork. Just gotta ride gentle and keep the oil off the brake rotor for a month until it arrives from Japan.

Rather than listening to the mechanic, send them somewhere that knows what they are doing. Pussy has a contact in Hamilton who rechrome aircraft oleo legs and it is to a much higher standard than the bike manufacturers do. Drop him a line and try that instead mate.
