Taking apart the front brake master cylinder...

    Hi There,

The right hand mirror mount is broken on my 07 honda vtr250 (see attached pic).. after unsucsessfully looking around for replacment parts (except a new one at 5-hundy or so), my best option is to take this into a aluminium welder who say they will be able to build it back up and re tap the thread again.

But the problem i have is that the whole thing is going to get HOT. So i have to remove everything out of the master cylinder before getting it done. I can just get stuck in and do it but i thought i would ask if there are any "gotcha"s involved...

Is this easier said that done, or a piece of cake?

    Thanks

    Simon

I would fit a clamp on or bar end mirror and file off the old broken mount & touch it up with some paint.
I love the smell of twin V16's in the morning..

There pretty easy to strip and re build so the steps you need to do is:

    1. Make sure you have lots of rags to stop any fluid leaks as it will remove paint from anything it touches.
    2. Remove top cap and all seals
    3. Remove the lever
    4. Pull back the rubber dust seal
    5. Remove circlip which was under dust seal
    6. Pull out piston assembly

Now all rubber parts are removed from the master cylinder and to re assemble its just the reverse of the above steps followed by bleeeding your brakes.

The thing is that its only going to cost $45 or so to get the alloy work done.

    Hmmm...

There are others, like CRG, but they might be getting more expensive rather than less. Certainly more then $45...

Might the part be available from a wreckers?

You're going to need circlip pliers

How about using a (second hand) master cylinder from another bike?
I'm sure Mr Honda has recycled parts over several other models.

    Have tried around...

Have found an alternative tho... Atomic Bike Wreckers had a couple of mounting brackets for the master cylinder/clutch (right and left) that have a mirror mounting hole in the top of them. $50 for two of them couriered...

OK.. even better.. Have had a reply from a wrecker that says this might work... certainly looks VERY much the same (see attached image).

    Thoughts on this anyone?

Without going into great measuring detail, the only way to tell for certain is to try and fit it. Ask the wrecker if they're ok with taking it back if it doesn't fit.

If they can tell you piston bore diameter and its the same or slightly bigger than the one you have now it will be ok, might need a rebuild kit if it leaks when you put it on.

at which point he's going to have to disassemble it anyway

ask the welder if there's any catches with the welding - will it be brittle? is there a chance of distortion that may ruin the unit?

replacement is almost always easier if the spare is a good one
