Battery / starting issues (VFR400)

Hi all,

I have a '90 Honda VFR400. Have had it for about a month now and has not had any issues with starting. Went out for a long ride last Sat, then on Sunday afternoon she didn't start up. It made the rapid tapping noise that happens when the battery is flat, so push started and took it out for a bit of a ride before having to park up again for a couple of hours. When I returned to it, it did the same thing. So push started, got it home and figured the battery wasn't charging up.

So I got hold of a battery charger and juiced it up, but it's still doing the same thing. Does this mean I need a new battery? Or is there something else going on? My old bike had this issue a couple of times, but after push starting and riding it wouldn't happen again.

Any help is much appreciated.

check 3 things first are both cables connected securely and next check your earth and third check main wire to the starter as this can also come loose

Charge the battery and have it load tested by an auto electrician. If it's dodgy, as I suspect, replace it and then check the charging system.

The charging system on the honda v4's are known to be very weak and fail pretty often so its better to test battery voltage with the engine running to see if its over/under charging. You may be lucky and it just be the battery but its more than likely going to be possibly your regulator rectifier as this is the part which usually fails. As was said above its best if you could get an auto electrician to have a look over it.

Used up one of my free roadside callouts from my insurance cover to have someone look at it. The battery has had it's day.

He checked it with it running too racerhead and said something about it not getting any voltage...so undercharging I assume?

I'm waiting on some rear indicator parts so haven't been able to ride it anyways, will get a battery when I pick those parts up.
