Fear of being bashed by rage-fuelled drivers is the main reason New
Zealanders steer clear of bikes, according to a new report.
Otago University lecturers and passionate pedallers Dr Ben Wooliscroft and Alexandra Ganglmair-Wooliscroft sent out 3000 surveys to randomly selected Kiwis for their Mean Streets study focusing on attitudes to
cycling.
They received almost 600 replies which revealed an overwhelming amount of respondents stayed off two wheels because of driver behaviour. The threat of attacks far outweighed factors that could entice people to part with their car, including petrol costs, cycle lanes and easier
commutes to work.
"It's hard of me to think of a cyclist I know who hasn't been confronted by a driver in one way or another," says Wooliscroft, 42.

He advises cyclists to "ride assertively and defensively", without
provoking drivers.

I am refering to the ones that block the road so you cant pass. riding side by side, not stopping at road signs and traffic lights.

And I'm refering to the ones that overtake cars at 240kph, cut car drivers up mid-corner and suddenly appear on the car drivers side of the road around blind corners (among other things).

Yeah, why the fuck do these streamline fockers seem to think they can cross the MIDDLE OF THE INTERSECTION with a red light, and just. sorta. Idle across at 1kp/h, waiting for it to turn green. They don't fucking stop for anything.

A case of ALL road users having to be considerate of others. I was going to say we could all just go back to horses, but then riders would still be beaten up cos their horse happened to shit right in front of the person following them...
I can't think of any mode of transport (maybe with the exception of trains) where the operators are entirely responsible for ensuring that they share fairly with everyone else. Whether it's in their nature to want to do it is another matter entirely.
