My book of maps says 530km (= 331miles)
Do you realise how many holes there could be if people would just take the time to take the dirt out of them?

From my place in Lower Hutt to Norton in Hamilton is about 540kms. Divide that by 8 & times by 5 should give you pretty close to what it is in miles - 337.5.

Welcome - had a though tho, that would be the most direct SH1, but would have thought it was a bit more than that. Err on the side of caution with your gas budget, just in case.

The web page at http://www.wises.co.nz/route/ will calculate you a turn-by-turn route between any two addresses in NZ, and report the precise distance to travel along the route it calculates.

Its routing seems to be a bit sucky, but for an easy problem like Hamilton -> Wellington it will probably be as good as anything else.

I travel it fairly regularly. Going down through Te Awamutu - Taumaranui - National Park is about 10 km shorter to Waiouru and you can make better time due to less traffic and small towns. It feels longer to me though cause less towns is less indication of progress. Much better on a bike though.

Western Bypass, Tokoroa - Whakamaru - Tokaanu - National Park are the best bike roads for the trip. Once past National Park you have the choice of back to SH1 via Waiouru or the Paraparas & Wanganui.

Just looking for a simple way down there. Was thinking of just taking the thermal explorere highway or whatever its called. Oh and WT you have more riding experiance than me so I would rather get the advantage of a home field. Just goin down there for a few days if I get the money so I can take some stuff to Stevo if he can get across the ferry to met me and only going if his decals get here before next tuesday.

I'm estimating off how much gas the ride gets in the city so that I wont get caught up short. I know I can get better distance on open road.
