There was a page on the net entitled BRP achille's heel with the most common/known failures - nothing on it is actually major. However I can't find the URL anymore.

On top of thet, being a thumper and a dirt bike, the first things I would check:
    - compression (the most important). Try kicking it thourgh the TDC (top dead center) without the use of the manual decompressor and if you can without significant effort then the compression is under question
    - bearings: front/rear wheel and rear linkage/suspension. Invidually they might not be expensive but if you end up doing the whole rear it will not be cheap

Another way to see the state of the engine is to start it from cold and see how easy it is.

Cheers for that.....things like bearings & linkages i could do myself to save $$$,thanks for the tip re compression etc. To start cold are they the standard find TDC, one kick with choke, next kick with no choke like the old XRs of the 80's I used to have? My xr250 really kicked back hard
Does anyone here recognise the bike at all......Id add a likny but I havent sussed out how to do that yet.

Take it 1.6L the oil capacity with filter change, took 1.9 out and reading was just slightly over the full mark.

Read while ago there was a fault at some stage with the supplied dipstick of giving the false reading that more oil needed to be added ?

How much do you normally put in ?

Cruza - 525 be the better choice if MX tracks and tight trail rides going to be your main form of riding.

Recently sold my DR650, just was to poggy for me off road, any good BRP's out there worth lookin at?

Others on my list are the KTM 640's.... Previously i was piloted around by a KTM950... probably should have kept it...

Scuse the ignorance but tis the 650r that's watercooled right? that be the one to look at?

there must have been 6 - there is one having trouble in the river at the end of TAers video. has the standard tank on which would have been a hassle

Sweet, good buy with all the extras. I had same decision between 525 and XR, from what I seen on trademe the 525 was good for about 300hrs (10,000 k's) before a rebuild - guy I bought motard set off his pig had done 80,000 k's and was just starting to use oil.
If you looking at mainly doing MX tracks probably best with a lighter better geared SX KTM or YZF's etc, if you dont live close to the track and not have money to burn you will have to trailer your bike to take full advantage of decent knobs anyway.

Read KTM state 525 no good for highway use , RFS motor not designed for it.

Anyone heard what highest amount of K's someone has gotten out of the KTM 520 to 530 series ?

Yep yep decisions decisions no one perfect bike out there that does it all ?
