Used Metzeler K1 slicks vs Pirelli Rossos

A question for you all knowing ones....
Ive just got hold of a used pair of K1 slicks...& Ive been running Rossos in clubmans as I dont have warmers yet & have been pleased with them & Im down to a 1:46 at Ruapuna......
So my question is:how quick are the K1's going to heat up compared to the Rossos?
Also I aint rode on no slicks yet, so am I better to just wait till I can afford warmers & go with the Devil I know? .

Depending on the weather and compound, slicks can take longer to warm up as they don't have tread blocks to move and generate heat, running them without warmers puts them through lots of heat cycles too which they don't like too many of.

Yeah Tony is right for once. Heat cycles are your enemy with slicks, they may not look worn out but can have "gone off" resulting in you sliding on your ass.

stick to the treaded tyres till you have warmers

Not trying to Hi Jack PTats thread but I was wondering how many watts a typical set of tyre warmers would use? Has anyone run them off an inverter?

So how many heat cycles can slicks handle before they're poked?

Depends on the brand, compound, weather, track etc.
That why all of the really fast guys sell off their used (but still new looking) slicks, you sometimes just cant tell when they are going to go off, you soon find out on the track of course :-( Also it obviously depends on the speeds you are doing, an older tyre will most likely be ok for someone who isnt testing its limits (ie trackday)

Just trying some racetec k1 F and K2 R as i have 4 trackdays till my first clubmans and need to push some boundaries with getting it over further, speed in corners etc so went for the r/tecs to try and instill confidence ! Done the one track day on them so far and aaaaarrrggg dont they wear fast ? Grabbed me some warmers off Phill www.tyrewarmers.co.nz at manfield yesterday so will use them from now on but they would have gone through a few cycles at the training day last tuesday Just how fast can they fuck out through said cycles ?
Edit : ok so you already answered that question lol but what signs do ya get that they're poked ? Slides ? Wear faster ? In other words do heat cycles harden them or soften them ?
A girlfriend once asked " Why is it you seem to prefer to race, than spend time with me ?"
The answer was simple ! "I'll prolly get bored with racing too, once i've nailed it !"

You guys just HAVE to run warmers if you are going to use slicks, or even super sticky "street" tyres (which are just as sensitive to heat ). The enemy is how fast you heat or cool these tyres, and that's where warmers come in. Trying to heat them up on the track doesn't get temp soaked right through the tyre, and the wear fast or tear if they don't have enough temp. Also, if they cool of too fast they get damaged on a molecular level, and are just never the same. The big advantage of warmers is that you heat them slowly, soak heat all the way through the tyre, and then cool them down slowly - and all of this in one heat cycle, because the tyre goes straigh back on warmers once you are off the track , eh

Just tried it and it aint viable ! 1kw inverter just aint got the grunt and over heated ! A 2 kw inverter sucks the battery dry after 20 minutes and even with the van on idle it shows low battery so unless ya wanna have ya van cranking all day it dont work !

Thanks for that Mr Sinfull. Saved me a lot of pissing around to come to no doubt, the same conclusion. Much appreciated.
