Music downloads - LEGAL - again?

I asked a while ago but the paraphrased response was "ha ha". Thought I'd try again (stupidy is repeating the same action expecting a different result

)

Where can I legally (ie happy to pay) download high (ie lossless) quality music?

I'm talking commercially available (alternative, rock, dance etc), not independant labels (amplifier.co.nz will do fine for most of that).

Why do I want lossless? Because I'm an audiophile tosser. And I have 5 different devices which play different format. NONE of which is a problem if I buy a CD.

The music industry is having a big cry about piracy and downloading but seems to be doing NOTHING to address the cause. It's soooo easy to download pirated copies. Try making it just as easy to download quality legal copies!

Itunes does 256 kbps AAC for it's plus range.

a) it's not lossless
b) it's not compatbile with all platforms
c) converting a "lossy" format to another format will usually deteriorate the sound.
d) it's only availbe for some of their music, the rest has media rights and encoded at 128kbps.

YUp itunes.

I support NZ music so will pay the $1.79 for the songs I like (Or $16 for album) through itunes.

I support NZ music too that's why I use amplifier.co.nz. (FTR - I make it a rule not to burn NZ music or emerging, there is SFA margin in it for our musicians as it is). In fact I'd love to pay for all the music fairly but the system is making it hard!

You'll be able to download fruity 24/96 quality FLAC files as well as std AIFF and 320k MP3's, but it is really 'audiophile tosser' music - no Britney or C&C Music Factory here buddy!
Also try the Linn site for more tosser fare, including the impossibly boring Barbr Jungr and the wildly exciting Scottish Chamber Orchestra.

Thanks and nice looking site, but probably more tossery than me. It's possible to appreciate good quality while listening to the (more modern) likes of radiohead, dire straits, mercury rev, mars volta, arcade fire, etc

Just buy the CDs. Nothing quite beats actually putting on a CD and listening to the entire thing. Then you also get the wonderful packaging and artwork associated with it as well.

Or go vinyl...

I've got a whole stack of CD's that haven't been listened to ever (actually good point I might sell 'em

). Unlistened because it's all electronic now baby.

Now good point on the vinyl - get a analogue/digital recorder and record in lossless format............

But kind of losses the point of internet shopping and the way media is heading (ie digitised)....

Alas nothing beats FLAC ripped from a real CD. Except may be for a FLAC downloaded via bittorrent. Speaking of which, are there any portable players supporting FLAC/wav?

If you use the credit card page that you are prompted with when trying to download content with insufficient funds in your account it will not display that it is a secure page due to the fact that the secure page is inside of an insecure frame. To ensure that it is secure simply right click on the page and select properties and look at the Connection area. It should state that the page is encrypted.
