    Fatal crash: SH5 (22 February)

Here is the police news release, RIP Rider, however my question is... IF they catch the driver that has supposedly dropped the oil, what will they be charged with (if anything).......

Incident type: Fatal Motor cycle crash

On Sunday 22nd February 2009 at about 8:54pm there was a fatal motor vehicle crash on State Highway 5, Rangitaiki, approximately 35 kilometres east of Taupo.
A 45 year old male was killed when his BMW motor cycle slid out of control on a moderate right hand bend.
An investigation of the scene revealed a large amount of oil had been deposited on the road surface. It appears that a 4 litre container of oil has fallen from a vehicle sometime after 8:00pm that evening.
A second motor cyclist was airlifted to Rotorua Hospital with serious internal injuries.
Two other motor cyclists in the group of four also lost control of their motor cycles and slid out on the oil but were not injured.
The road surface is chipped sealed and was dry at the time of the crash, the weather was fine.
Police investigations into the cause of the crash are continuing. Police would like to speak with anyone that saw the vehicle that lost the oil.
    Constable T Mitchell-Ellis
    Taupo

    Issued By: Inspector Christopher Tate

Nothing, because they won't be able to prove who dropped the oil. Unless the person who dropped it owns up - yeah, right.

We got caught up in the aftermath on our way home from Paeroa. The slick was across both lanes.
It was not a pretty sight.

    RIP.
Hope the other guy will make it.

im so sick to death of useless car drivers not being responsible! wtf would you have to do to loose a bottle of oil?? likely on the back of a ute or trailer and not tied down.

RIP rider, and best of luck to the others.

    Didn't stand a chance.................

A 45-year-old man was killed when his BMW motorcycle slid out of control on State Highway 5 last night.

The incident happened on a moderate right hand bend at Rangitaiki, approximately 35 kilometres southeast of Taupo, at about 8.54pm.

An investigation of the scene revealed a large amount of oil on the road surface.

It appears that a four litre container of oil had fallen from a vehicle some time after 8pm.

A second motorcyclist was airlifted to Rotorua Hospital with serious internal injuries.

Two other motorcyclists in the group of four also lost control of their motorcycles and slid out on the oil but were not injured.

Police said the road surface was dry at the time of the crash, and the weather was fine.

Investigations into the cause of the crash are continuing.

Police would like to speak to anyone who saw the vehicle which lost the oil.

They are not alone. Absolute carnage.
Do you realise how many holes there could be if people would just take the time to take the dirt out of them?

    Unhappy

This is a fear I have when rounding fast bends, hitting a patch of oil and sliding onto the wrong side of the road into oncoming, or off a cliff. Oil is so slippery, there's just nothing you can do.
    Tragic thing to happen.

That makes three over the weekend.

    Condolances to all involved.

Unless of course it turns out it came from a motorcross rider's vehicle.

Then i bet you people won't be calling for blood and it's now just an unfortunate accident.

This is no different than diesel really, more slippery, but easier to see. If the cops do nothing about diesel caused accidents , which are an everyday occurrence, why would you expect them to expend resources on this?

We all like to nail the guy that dropped the oil.....
Because we rightly so are very upset about such a careless senseless way to wipe out fellow human biker beings....

No argument from me....my deepest sympathy goes out to all involved

    However.....
The person that lost that oil....
Knows by now it was he (or she ) who so carelessly but unintentionaly caused this terrible carnage......
How will it affect him (or her) for the rest of their life....?
It would be a terrible burden to live with if it were me.....
Opinions are like arseholes: Everybody has got one, but that doesn't mean you got to air it in public all the time....
