cb125 coil probs

with a 12v batt running on total loss with a 6v coil after 5 mins up the road a puff of smoke lets off and something liquid like is sizzling and bubling away then drips down onto the head in a white wax. The coil is quite hot too. Anyone know what I'm doing wrong?

What you did wrong is run 12volts through a 6volt coil and burn't it out. You now need to buy a new 12v coil. Good Bosch ones can be had from Repco. Check wether your new coil needs a ballist resistor if it does you will nead to get one of those too. Coils that don't need ballist resistors would probably be better for your application.

How do I know if it needs a ballist resistor? and why would it have a 6v coil... I've never seen a 6v battery. is there any advantage or disadvantage into putting a 12v coil and battery in it?

That's because you're a teenager right? Most old small bikes were 6 volt. Even VW cars of the type you might have seen in movies like Herbie does dalas or whatever were 6V. So you knew it was 6v & you just decided not to believe it? Maybe they didn't know what they were talking about when they wrote 6v on the side of it.

I didn't bother looking and assumed that it was a 12 volt. So would putting a 12v coil with the 12v battery on it be fine or would it mess something else up or what?

If you buy a Ripco coil it will be enormous, but it will state if it required a ballast resistor or not.

Now now Dave take it easy on the poor wee fella. Some of that era Honda's ran 12V charging systems and 6V ignition systems ala CB125T, so not the hardest mistake to make. I'd hazzard to guess the ballast resistor has been removed from the system at some stage earlier by someone who thought they knew better.

Theres a "universal coil" 12 volt from whiteline for $80 I could get. Think that'd work fine? ... But like I asked after f5dave decided to give me shit (<3

You can use the 12v coil and the bike will go a little better. The points won't last very long though.

I ran 12v coils on a really high revving CB360 I owned but ran 18v into them to get the voltage high enough for the bike to run. One day I left the ignition turned on after I stopped it - same result as post #1. Didn't really matter though as it had dropped a sleeve as well.
