I use kero for cleaning and Bel Ray foam filter oil (very sticky) I noticed that if I rotate the filter back and forwards a couple of times in the housing before tightening the nut that holds it-that a perfect seal is made between the sponge and plastic rim.
The oil is also very good for playing pranks on your mates.

I wait until i've used all my filters then just chuck them in the washing machine, and just make sure the seals has plenty of lube...
too easy
although, in the past i have used petrol to wash filters every weekend for over a year without any glue issues. i also used engine grease to seal it![]()
it must only affect some brands of filters depending on the glue they use,
ive seen ready filters come to bits with using petrol, what brand of filters do you use?
i use twinair on both the 426 and 250

oh , i was asking motorbicyclist,
uni, twin air, the stock yamaha one and the home made one that came with my bike all seem petrol safe
yet i've seen some ROAD bike filters have the glue fail, and some even have the foam 'rot' due to being soaked in petrol
I reckon whether or not to grease the filter flange depends from bike to bike as some designs are better than others.
On my KLX the filter used the thin edge of the cage to (barely) seal the filter against airbox, so I greased it every time. The old thin green No Toil grease was almost useless. The newer white stuff is much thicker but it's dear alright. Would the No Toil cleaner deal to vaseline?
On the KTM the filter, cage and airbox flanges seem to get good contact, although I've read a few posts on KTMtalk on being careful to seat the thing properly, it being a bit vague to accurately centre (= lunched engines in one ride). I haven't greased it yet, but I might for the rest of summer anyway just for a bit of extra piece of mind. I like to wipe an oily finger inside the air boot as a bit of a dust tell-tale as well.
Although I loved the easy cleaning etc, I was never really happy with the No Toil so I switched to 'More-Toil' Bel Ray for the extra tackiness. I had a look at one of Reckless's filters and it might have been even tackier so now trying out Motul.
I would say clean air is just as important on a 2T as you've got it all moving past the big end bearing and swirling up through the transfer ports around piston, which also has a much bigger than 4T skirt surface area to pick up grit.
Next project is to make a big pre filter to deal with KTM's weird dirt-collecting airbox design. Should take some load off an easily dust clogged single small filter.
