Aftermarket mufflers and engine damage?

Thank you Mr. Triple Z, you explained that well. Perhaps I shouldn't be riding the Hyosung as hard as what I do...I'm often doing 140+ on the roads...

A big sound would be nice but if I can't open it up like I am so used to doing it's probably not worth it.

I think you have missed the point.
Not saying you cant ride your bike hard, what I am saying is if you change your muffler, and you wish to ride the bike hard, get the mixtures checked and adjust if necessary.
This applies to any modification which may affect the way the engine runs.

I say go for it.
On smaller bikes like yours you aren't gonna get huge power gains from anything unless you use nitrous etc so an aftermarket exhaust is mostly gonna be for looks and sound.
Even if you lose a couple HP the satisfaction of having your bike sound the way you want could make it worthwhile for you.
You can check the sparkplugs and they will give you an indication of if it's running lean or not (tan = good, whiteish = lean, black/wet = rich).
