Often quoted - but, nevertheless, false

"Often quoted - but, nevertheless, false - statistic that we have the second highest rate of imprisonment in the western world."

Criminologist Greg Newbold challenges Rethinking Crime and Punishments Kim Workman following the recent publication of an article, titled 'Another One Bites the Dust: Recent Initiatives in Correctional Reform in New Zealand', by noted New Zealand criminologist Dr Greg Newbold.

"This 'suppress the unpalatable message' approach is typical of the liberal Left when it is confronted with evidence that doesn't fit its mindset. Perhaps what scares Mr Workman most is Dr Newbold pointing out that from 1950-85 our imprisonment rate per 100 crimes committed dropped from three per 100 to 0.5 per 100.

Achievement is not always success while reputed failure often is. It is honest endeavor, persistent effort to do the best possible under any and all circumstances.

And of the Right, but I digress...

Thanks for the link to the Scoop article. Here's a link to Greg Newbold's article:

Unfortunately, you need a subscription to view the full text.

Sometimes, journals let academics post copies of their articles on their WWW pages, but I see no sign of it here
