Hi there, I'm a newbie here, and I've done a search of the forums but not come up with much.
I'm trying to find some way to learn about bike maintenance without killing myself by screwing up my bike.
There don't seem to be many courses around, and I have a day job (10 hours min per day) which prevents me from hanging out at the local dealership.
Anyone got any ideas?

Also looking for ride outs with people on larger Enduros.

Ways I learnt:

1. Go to some of the KB meet ups. Despite all appearances.. some of the people here actually are kind of useful and able to teach you something.

2. Join a club. There are bound to be people with various skills in bikes.

3. Ask all your other friends if they have bikes. They might know something.

4. Get a FULL maintence manual for your bike. I know for mine, it runs through how do test the electrical system, change brakes, chains etc.. and gives you electrical reistances, torque amounts.. pretty much everything you need to royally fuck your bike if you didn't have that manual you can adhere to.

Maybe try a more specific post like..."anybody in Wellington who can help me to.....change oil/forkseals..(or whatever) on BMW 1150 GS.....beer provided

Of course you need to get your hand on a workshop manual first......

buy yourself a non running crapper and get it running,
you can get a wee shit box for next to nothing,
if you bugger it up, its only a few bob you have wasted

Check out the local "Community Education" courses

e.g. out West (Auckland) we have

which has an "easy rider" course for bike maintenance.
These courses run 3-4 times a year, and are aimed at evenings - usually at a local school.

Should be something similar in Wellington
