ZX6R Gear peg not returning?

At the start of my last ride I set off and could only select 1st gear. Until higher revs and then it would allow me 2nd and so on. It was if the peg wouldn't return after selection. Once up and moving it was working but I came to a stop at and intersection and was in 2nd or 3rd it wouldn't let me change unless I gave it some revs?? I am waiting for it to arrive from Auckland (another story). Is this something I should worry about or just keep riding as once moving it works okay.

I am not sure how the gearbox works but that really doesn't sound good.

As far as am aware the return on the gear lever is sprung from inside the gearbox, whether its a spring that is specific to the lever action or its returned by a necessary mechanical process it still sounds like a "get the guys in the know" either way there could be broken spring loops floating around or something even more serious.
