When I lived in Chch, we had a magnificent thunder/hailstorm one day. Across the road from us was a tall steel chimney on a commercial building - the tallest structure in the area. We watched and waited, but unfortunately, it didn't get struck by lightning. We had to content ourselves with watching some poor schmoe's car get filled with hail (he left his sunroof open).
Then the hail filled all our downpipes and guttering, the flat roof filled up with hail'n'rainwater, and it started raining inside (mostly from the light fittings). Power off, run around gathering receptacles to catch water (cups, pots, bins, etc.) Last entertainment of the day was watching one of the marketing execs outside cleaning out the guttering in the rain.
