After years of keeping his identity secret, former Formula One world champion Michael Schumacher has revealed he is "The Stig" - but news reports suggest his unveiling is another stunt.

"The Stig" is an anonymous professional test car driver from hit motoring show Top Gear, and each episode sees the character whizzing around test tracks in powerful cars wearing a white jumpsuit with his features hidden by a white crash helmet.

The original Stig was axed from the show after British racing-car driver Perry McCarthy revealed his identity in an autobiography in 2002.

In an episode broadcast in England on Sunday, the current Stig took off his white helmet to loud cheers from the studio audience, revealing himself to be Schumacher, Formula One's most successful driver and seven times world champion.

However, BBC News reported that it was unclear whether Schumacher really was the Stig or whether it was a stunt.

"Clarkson jokingly pretended not to recognise the German driver and asked him his name, before shouting to the audience: 'It's Michael Schumacher!'," BBC News reported.

"The presenter had revealed in his column in The Sun that Stig's identity would be a "staggering surprise" to viewers."

In January, media reports had claimed Stig was Ben Collins, who featured as a stuntman in the James Bond film Quantum of Solace.
