If you get an SV650 you can ride in the F3 class or the Protwin class depending on what modifications the bike has. Either way, you will be in the same race as they are run together. You can always cross enter into supersport if you want more track time.

600 would be the way to go. Then you can do f2 and f1. You wont come last I assure you of that.
Start moving round on the bike for sure it helps heaps, even do it on the road when not pushing you will look like a twat but you will get a feel for it.

The last time I rode J-lo on the road it would not turn if I wanst hanging off it.

The 250's are too dear cos of learner laws and only suitable for shortarsed skinny people.
The 400's are cheap for F3 and more than capable of top 5 finishes without spending stupid money on them. If they're pre 89 spec (most 400's are) then you can go into post classic junior. If you spend money and have talent then you could also play in F2 on one.
Pre 89 600's...yeah, great for post classic junior but they still use tyres and the only other class you can put them in is F2....which would be tricky against modern stuff.
Pre 89 litre bikes....great for post classic senior but then the other class is F1...plus they'd still eat tyres.
F3 spec SV650....well it can also go in F2 but you're talking reasonable bucks for summit competitive.
Modern 600....enjoy spending money on tyres, ohlins, etc. If you can't get top 5 at VMCC club level then what's the point? If you're rich then by all means get one.
Modern 1000...as above...and you only get one class.

I'd say if you can afford it, get a pro pro twin spec SV650 and once you're up to speed it'll be more than capable of getting reasonable results in F2. If you're poor white trash like me then a cheapo 400 is a good starting point.

You'll maybe struggle to do 2 classes for the first few meetings. Aside from lack of fitness, I found the concentration required and sheer buzz seemed to drain me.
